DW 414 SM rechamber to 41 GNR #2
« on: June 09, 2006, 07:12:59 AM »
Well I got my DW 7414 SM back from Gary Reeder today.I sent this gun off to have it rechamberd to 41 GNR #2 (445 SM necked down to 41) this round will shoot a 210 gr XTP at 1900 fps or a 265gr cast at 1850+.
And before anyone thinks I messed up my DW  ,I first sent the gun to DW to have a new cylinder installed on the gun that way I still have my 414 on one cylinder and the 41 GNR #2 on the second cylinder.
I will work up some loads this weekend and post some numbers Monday.
I have 4,6,8,10" bll but I will use the 8" barrel to work up loads.

I'll be curious to see if you gain much by this as I figured the SuperMag case was already pretty much at the maximum useful capacity in a revolver.

Also the, 445 Supermag's nominal max pressure is the same as the 44 Mag (Not that people don't hot rod it.) while the 357 SuperMag has a nominal maximum pressure considerably higher than the 357 Mag.  I'm not sure where the 414 Supermag would fall in this picture.

How easy is it to change the cylinders on the Supermag? I have looked mine over and never figured out how to take it off  :? . This sounds like a cool idea the 41 cal is not that smaller than a 44 .429, would like to here a range report on how much more velocities you are able to get over the 414.

Here is the information on the GNR wildcats.

I got an instruction sheet with the cylinder to help me change it out when the time comes to shoot the 414 SM.
I expect to gain 150-200 fps with the 41GNR #2 at the same pressures as the 414 SM.
I already have 210gr XTP's and 265gr LFNGC loaded,I have bullet moulds for 305 and 325gr WFNGC when I get time to cast some.

I reckon the 4" barrel is a real flame thrower!

I'll be interested in your results on that GNR round.

Here is some data on the 41 GNR #2
I started low on the loads since I did NOT have any data for the 265,305 and 325gr cast boolits.I used Quick Load to workup starting loads.
I used WC680 and H110 for powder with WLP and WLR primers,WLP worked better even though I have a long way to go before I finish all loads.Forgot to add----- I used a Burris 2X scope on sand bags.
265gr cast ran 1200-1540 with H110 producing the highest velocity,I think 1800+ is reachable and be under 45K on pressure.I had groups of 3/4" at 50 yds at 1300 fps with WC680.
305gr cast ran 1050-1200 with WC680 I did not get to the H110 loads,It looks like 1650+ is reachable, the best groups ran 3/4" at 50 yds at 1200 fps with WC680.
 325gr cast ran 1000-1150 with WC680 I did get to the H110 loads,also looks like 1600 is reachable,best groups ran 3/4" at 50 yds at 1100 fps with WC680.
I will get to H110 this weekend and increase the charge on the cast loads.

Dave,
Back when Gary was in Sarasota I had him setup my 41 mag with a spare cyl. in 41 GNR (44 mag necked to 41 caliber.) I will get a procedure for you to change your cyl. in the next few days.

Got back to the range this weekend.Using a DW- 8 " Barrel with Leupold 4x scope,I took the 2x off not enough power.
It look's like the DW likes cast boolits, using WC680 and H110 Powders and WLP primers in Starline 445 SM Brass necked down to 41.
265gr cast using H110-1715 fps---- 1" at 50 yds
265gr "        "   WC680-1690 fps----1.25" at 50 yds
305gr "        "     H110-1350 fps----- 1.5" at 50 yds
305gr "      "     WC680-1400 fps----1.5" at 50 yds
325gr "        "     H110- 1450 fps----1.5" at 50 yds
Accuracy with the heavier cast boolits is looking very good especially the 265gr LFNGC.The 265gr H110 load is very close to MAX.

That's amazing accuracy, Sean! A tribute to both you, the handloader, and DW, for engineering an incredibly accurate six shooter, and built strong as well.

Now, someday, it would be great if you could do the same kind of testing with the 414 cylinder in place shooting 414 brass....with the 4x Leopold. I just wonder which caliber would be the winner in the accuracy dept.

Enjoy the gun!!
Well loved tools & toys:  All Dan Wessons of course:

Hi,
Yes I still have the GNR on and I will be taking it pig hunting on the 23rd of this month.I will be shooting 305gr WFNGC at 1600 fps.The DW shoots heavy bullets extremely well.

If I remember right $175.00 and the dies are  $90.00,the dies are Custom Hornady that resize the 445 case easily.
