Where to start with a 257 Weatherby ????
« on: June 09, 2006, 10:36:24 AM »
I just got a Weatherby Vanguard in 257 Weatherby and I would like to load 100 or 110 grain bullets . Can anyone give me an idea of where to start with powder and primers ?

For primers, I'd start with Fed 215.  This is what Weatherby uses on their factory ammo.  In my 257 Weatherby Mark V, I had the best luck with Sierra 117 grain gamekings and H4831SC.  Didn't get consistent results with 100 grain bullets and different powders, however, W760 with Speer 100 grain spitzers showed some promise.  Tried a few different bullets with Accurate Arms 8700 powder and nothing short worth a darn.  Loaded up a couple different bullets recently with IMR 7828 but haven't shot them yet.  But I have high hopes (my local shop didn't have the 7828SC).

Of course, your results may differ.

Good luck, and good shootin'.

IMR 4350(what old Roy Weatherby used) and 100 gr. nosler b.tips or partitions have always worked for me in Mark V's.For primers either Fed. 215 or CCI large rifle magnum. Hope this helps.

There's a good article in the Rifle Mag this month on the .257 WBY. I think the first thing would be to find the twist of the barrel. Early ones had a 1 in 12, the newer ones have a 1 in 10. Bullets over 100 grs may not shoot well in the 1 in 12. That's why WBY changed the twist on the newer rifles. With premium bullets the 100's are just fine.

Hi-

My father-in-law has good luck with a max load of IMR 4350 and the 117 grain hornady round nose.  His gun is an old German Mark V with the 1-12 twist.  He tried numerous combo's, but the round nose was the best.  That seems pretty gross to have a round nose in a 25 caliber magnum, but it shoots well.  I'm guessing that the shorter bullet length of the round nose is easier stabilized than a long boattail configuration, acting more like a 100 grain bullet????
