Ocean Flies
« on: June 09, 2006, 07:08:33 PM »
Hello all!  I am heading down to see my Dad in Destin Florida in about two weeks and I was wondering what are some good flies to fish the Intercostal Water Way and the Ocean with?  I am taking my rod (8'6" 5wt and Grandfathers 9'5" 7 wt) and am planning to go after Sea Trout and such, no shark fishing or anything planned on the trip.  Maybe, just maybe I will catch a Sea Bass on the ol' fly rod.  I'm used to fishing the rivers near home, Hiwasse and Tellico, but have never fly fished in the ocean.  I have seen flies for the ocean, they look like huge feathers and balls of cotton and what not, I just don't know what to look for when selecting the flies nor which ones will work.  Thanks for the replies.

Dear 22rimfan:
Hooking something in salt with your rods should be a hoot!!
Do you really think salt water flies need to be so different from the stuff we use in fresh? At least as far as fish attracting qualities? For the rods you're going to use?                                        Woodbutcher

Woodbutcher, to be honest I have no idea.  I have looked on the net for flies that are termed salt-water and well, they look huge and, well honestly, guady.  Big long pink, orange, chartruse, colors.  I have seen some poppers, which got me to thinking, why not just put a regular popper on the thing and have at it.  Lately I've been experiamenting with flies on ultralights, so if you can use a fly on them surely you can use a regular lure on a fly rod???  Maybe I'll push down some of the barbs just in case!     I don't know for sure, but I will definately give it a try.  Just something else to think about.  You all take care and keep fishing!

Woodbutcher is right... a lot of the larger streamers/poppers that you would use for bass will work in saltwater (according to a book I am reading by Lefty Kriegh).  Try some clouser minnows, decievers, and other streamers, or ask at a local shop (sorry if you already went on the trip).  On memorial day weekend I went to St. Augustine and fly fished saltwater for the first time.  I used  tandem clouser minnows on an 8wt, and caught a 13" mackerel in the surf.  Although it was the only fish I caught all weekend... it was my first fish on a fly that I had tied.  Try the surf in the morning before the wind picks up... look for baitfish being pushed up on the shore in front of the breaking surf.

Good Luck!
