25" or 26" barrel?
« on: June 11, 2006, 12:33:32 AM »
What do you think guys?  Having an E.A.Brown 97D rifle built in 256 Win Mag and I am leaning towards a 26" barrel to get every fps possible from the case.  Is this too long and would a 24" barrel get top velocity from this case?  Going with a 12 twist.  Need advice.  Thanks.

Alan

The 256 Win is a good ole round, I had a Colt Coltsman rebarreled to 300 H&H with a 26" barrel and it felt like a fishing pole, took it back and had it cut to 24" and it handled real good. :D

I like the long barrels but the 256 really doesn't NEED 26 inches.. It won't hurt it though.. It mostly boils down to what you want the rifle for and personal preference..

Alas, ask Brown but I believe 22-24" would be plenty. You simply don't have much powder to burn. Regards, Byron
