Ruger UL 308 or 7-08 SS??'s
« on: June 11, 2006, 08:18:12 AM »
Has anyone out there shot one of the little short 18 1/2" - 20" barreled Stainless MkII's in either 308 or 7-08? How light is this gun with its "black painted hardwood" stock? An info would be appreciated.

Not painted hardwood----the stocks are synthetic---or in other words---plastic.

My stainless UL is a .243---UL's have 20in barrels-----compacts have 16in barrels.

Even though they call it an ultra light---its still a Ruger---so its not exactly light and the name is a bit misleading.

OK so the differences between a "Compact" and a "Ultra Light" is that the Compact has a 16" barrel and a shorter - aka "Youth" length stock....and the UL has a standard sized synthetic (Plastic?) stock but with a 20" barrel...right? Muzzle blast on the 16"er ought to be spectacular.

Somehwere in my dim memory I have a see a reference to a "painted hardwood stock" on  a UL type rifle...Howa? Anyway not important.

So the UL is a typical Ruger receiver, but with a lighter weight barrel taper? Hard to believe you could get much weight savings from chopping 2"s off a barrel. does the UL also come in a wood/blue steel confiuration like the Compact? has anybody actually weighed their UL and does it hit the listed 6lb 6-8oz"s quoted?

Looking for a decent inexpensive alternative to a Kimber 84M or Montana. I know I know N U L A is lighter than a Montana but NULA's start at $2800 before any custom add on's. Montana 308's atart out nekkid at 5lb's 2ozs so the under 7lb deal s very doable even in a wood stock. I'd just like to come up with a under 7 lb all up shooter for half the price of a Montana for 2-300 yard on up to elk sized critters for sneakin'Npeakin' in the rough stuff or working out of a tight box blind. Any thing over 7lbs all bets are off and I'll keep shopping for a rack gun to paddle the pirouge with. Thanks Ron

I have both a m-77 (30-06) and a m-77 ul (270).  The three differences are 20"barrel, plus the barrel is tapered thinner, and the stock is slightly slimmer especially in the forend.  I have a VXII 3X9 on the 06 and a nikon 4X buckmaster on the 270.  So the UL is noticeably lighter.  I think it feels more like a 22 magnum, perhaps a little heaveir.  I lightened the trigger on both M77's and they both shoot quite well.  the UL 270 barrel certainly heats up quite fast after a couple shots, so take your time sighting in.

My Ruger M77 MKII Ultralight long action in .257 Roberts is walnut & blue and weights 6 lbs. 4 oz. naked. I added a leather 1" Montana  sling &  Leupold M8 4x scope and the whole rig unloaded is 7 lbs. even. Walnut wood density can vary from one lot to another, so others may be heavier. It feels quite light to carry for me & it points like my index finger. The 20" toothpick barrel I prefer over the 16-1/2" stubby flame thrower, thought as mentioned, it does heat up quickly at the range. For hunting , the rig is perfect for me.

I have a stainless/synthetic ultralight 7mm-08, 20" barrel.........., I love it but would like it even more if I could find a replacement for the synthetic "boat paddle" stock.  Anyone have a wood version that they'd care to part with (or any suggestions for an aftermarket wood or laminate)?

veri. you could consider a remington #7 also. I have one and a older tang safety ruger UL blued wood I don't have any way to weight them right now but they feel close to the same. Byron  ;D  You could buy both and put zeiss scopes on them for less than $2800.00 (just a thought)
