K31 guys - Alum or steel clamp on St. Marie scope mount?
« on: June 13, 2006, 06:04:27 AM »
I am planning to get one the St. Marie Graphics clamp-on scope mounts for my K31.  For the lower price, lower weight, and maybe less possibility of marking up my receiver, I like the idea of the aluminum.  I am not going to hang a big heavy scope on it either, and I intend to use the Warne 3/8 rings (can't remember the ring #'s right now).  I haven't had any experience with these mounts.  Any thoughts on the aluminum vs. the steel clamp-on mount?  Any feedback appreciated. :D

I can't decide either, but probably aluminum to keep weight down.  8)

I got one of the Zhu alum. mounts and the rings came with it.    I put a cheap 3 x 9 tasco on top and  I'm a am happy camper.  At 100 yds both of my k-31s shot small groups but I haven't got to shoot  at 2 -300 yds yet. One is a blonde and the other auburn and I love them both. I need to make or buy a cheek pad  and a slip on recoil pad for the stock.    A couple of times the short eye relief scope brushed my eyebrow when it recoiled.   I was shooting from a bench and not holding the forearm.   Bought my dies but still looking for a supply of boxer brass.  The GP11 is excellent for paper punching but I'm holding out for something easier to reload.

According to Pierre, the designer of the mounts (wo has 40 plus years experience with these Swiss rifles...), there is no advantage of steel over aluminum. Some people were asking for steel tho. Go with the aluminum for it's lighter weight (and lower cost.)

As far as cheek pads, check out the link below.

Custom made for the K-31, and he can put any image you may want on the cheek pad.

Thanks for the input guys.  Aluminum it is.

Two weeks ago I had never seen a K31 in person. Last week I finally got the one I had ordered from my dealer.  Two minutes after I got home with it, I called him to order another one.  I was hooked!  Now I have two more on order from another source - going to pick one up next Monday.  My wife is sensing that something is going on here.  Too much activity, quiet phone calls, loooking at rifle pictures on the net. She is suspicious.  She is watching me like a hawk.

And now those awesome looking cheek pads.  I am doomed........... :-D
