I have been saving to get a T/C Encore rifle in preparation for whtietails this fall.  Well, that'll be delayed somewhat.  Yesterday, a coworker sold me his Grandpa's 336RC in 30-30 for $150, his suggestion, not mine.   Naturally I couldn't let the deal pass me by, and I'm glad I got it.  "F" series serial number (manufactured in 1949), and in excellent shape!  Acouple of tiny scratches on the butt, a little rust in the rear sight dovetail, and a little blueing wear (less than my 1993 built Ruger 77 that I bought new) around the muzzle and lever.

Originally it was going to be my toss-in-the-truck gun, but I think its brother .35 Remington (from 1982) with those hideous white spacers will do that duty.  It is in worse shape.

If you had asked me 4 years ago, I would say I would never own a Marlin.  Now I gladly own two, and I'm sure I'll eventually add an 1895 to the group.

azmike- I too have come over from the dark side. I was once a Winchester man, mostly from movies I think. I thought the solid top action of Marlins was ugly. Now that I have seen the light, I think it is the perfect platform for scope or peep. Admittedly, I still prefer the straight grip, but the pistol grip is even starting to grow on me. I agree, white spacers need to go in the trash. Now if they would just go back to a slim forearm and forget that pregnant aberation presently being made. And offer the option of smooth as well as checkered stocks.
Any law that makes self-defense illegal or impractical is an illegitimate law, and should not be obeyed, because such a law ultimately subjects people to the criminal element.

I always thought the same about the Marlin solid top being ugly, but they actually FEEL better to me than the 94, as far as balance is concerned.  Oddly enough, my 1982 model 336 has the skinny forearm, but this "F" series serial # from '49 has the fat one, and the barrel band is in front of the front sight.  Don't know if it came this way from the factory, or somebody modified it.  If it is a modification, it was well done.
