Rem 513SA - accuracy and ammo questions for you guys
« on: June 15, 2006, 02:56:11 AM »
have had this gift from my uncle for about 40 years...unassembled....got a local smith to find an original SA stock a couple of years ago...but had the original lyman peep put on it and let is set at that...would plink at targets and cans with it occasionally, but nothing seriously....though I knew the gun had a lot of potential as a high grade 22 lr matchmaster...

long story short, finally got the bug to set it up to max out the potential .... and then actually set to the task of working with it to synch everything up ..... took it to the big smith in my area (who is custom building a .30 -06 for me) to scope it.....had him put a leupold rimfire family 3 x 9 on it.....

so the questions for the group are:

1.) considering that this is a bull barrel matchmaster....and one that would surprise me even with a peep sight at 100 yards....should I be zeroing this at 50 yards, 75 yards or 100 yards?

2.) anyone with background with the 513SA have an idea of what I might expect with the gun and the right ammo?

3.) on the ammo front, am looking to find my way to the best round to get the best accuracy from the rifle....up to this point with the plinking I have been using any old thing that was around with no thought as to whether it was good or not......so for the sake of experimentation on the first pass, I got three 50 shot boxes of (one each) Wolf Match Extra, Federal Gold Medal Target, Remington Yellow Jackets....question is what folks have seen with these rounds from an accuracy point of view?

Thanks for the help guys.... :)

If yours is anything like mine, you will have to work to find a load that will not shoot. Mine is every bit as accurate as my Volquartsen 10/22, but likes a wider selection of ammo. I zero at 50 yards, for no particular reason.

My best luck has been with Federal Gold medal match and Eley target rifle.

These are such fine rifles that reek of quality and care in manufacture. Have fun with yours!
