Which .22 auto for my wife?

Hi everyone,

My wife has informed me that I'm allowed (required) to buy her a .22 auto pistol for her birthday. I'm trying to figure out what to get her. Actually, I'm probably trying to find what to avoid, since I'm going to take her to the store and get her something that she likes and has good ergonomics. I'm a firm believer that handguns have to fit you well for you to do your best shooting.

This is for plinking and target shooting, not for self-defence. I already have a Ruger Mark II with a 6 7/8  inch target barrel. She doesn't like it because it's heavy, so ...

What's a good, smaller .22 auto? What should I avoid?

Maybe one of the fixed sight Rugers in 4 1/2".  They are alot lighter than the longer heavy barrel ones but shoot very well.  I shot some falling plates recently with one of those new Walther/Smith and Wesson P-something or others, ( the dealer will know what I mean). that was very light and fun to shoot.  The plates are 8" though and pretty close, so I don't want to comment on accuracy.  It was definately a fun gun though, and cheaper than the Ruger.

A plinker for the wife...yes, one of the shorter barreled Ruger's or perhaps a S&W 22A.  Both are light, reasonably accurate and easy to operate.

The S&W mag release is easier for most with smaller hands to operate...but the S&W is a little finicky with ammo whereas most Rugers will cycle most ammo without any problems.

Whatever she chooses, get here one of those do-hickeys that makes loading the mags easier.  They only cost about $5...it will take the pressure off of her thumb when reloading.  Let her reload once without the device then let her reload with it...she'll love it.

I picked the Browning Buckmark Challenge for that purpose because it's designed with grips for people with small hands. It's a good, high quality gun. I enjoy shooting it too. It did need a $50 trigger job because pull was too heavy out of the box (You'd need similar service for a Ruger too.)

Aside from being a good gun, it's very appealing to look at.  Even with my big hands I enjoy shooting with it.

Walther P22...

My girlfriend got one a few months ago and she has almost all the auto 22s on the market... She says I can have all of them, but she will never give up her Walther...

Diddo on the Walther. I love the looks of it, but it does not fit my large hands. It is great for the smaller hand crowd though and a well built pistol.
Though it's almost always a safe bet with a Ruger MKII or III. They are just good shooters.

Good, small .22 auto.......Im gonna agree your best bet is the Walther P22.  Seems to be the best "fit" for your needs.

Personally, I would also try a Ruger with a shorter, bull barrel - perhaps the shorter barrel will make it seem "smaller" to her.  I think the Rugers are the better made gun over the Walther......

Made by the same company as Bersa in Argentina.  I just picked one up, however haven't had a chance to shoot it yet  :cry:   It should be good choice if you may get a Bersa .380 or something similar for CC --  this 22 is built on the same frame as the Bersa/Firestorm .380 making it good as a practice shooter.

I had completely forgot about the Bersa/Firestorm .22s - I have heard many favorable reviews on them.  I agree they are definitely worth a look.  I really like the styling of their guns.......

Since I already have a Sig .40 S&W, I went with the new Sig Mosquito. After we come back from the first trip to the range ( a couple weeks), I'll post an update of my impressions.

From what I see, it's a terrific piece for someone who owns other Sigs.

A good choice for general plinkin', can skippin', or wastin' time on the range is the new Walther P22.  Mikey.

Another vote for the P22. It is my wife's plinker and she likes it. I have large hands, so it doesn't feel great to me, but it is fun to shoot (my Buckmark fits me better).

I like the P22 features: SA/DA, ambidextrous mag release, slide lock, hammer, adjustable sites & grips, etc.
