Shooting Up
« on: April 02, 2003, 08:29:31 AM »
Squirrels live in trees...So naturally when hunting squirrels, often the shots presented are "up".  Here's my question:  How do you all feel about shooting up?  Do you live in an area where you don't have to worry about this as much as in more populated areas?

Where most of my squirrel hunting was done growing up, I've never felt comfortable shooting at a squirrel sitting on the limb of a tree with a .22.  I was taught to always be sure of what's behind your target and was also aware of those little warning labels on .22 ammo.  You know the ones: Careful, range over a mile (-and a quarter, -and a half, etc).  I would shoot squirrels on the ground and on tree trunks, or any other time when I knew that if I missed the squirrel I wouldn't hit anything bad.  I was also told that a .22 had more potential for damage if it missed its target than smaller shotguns pellets would.  So, I used shotguns more than .22s for those tree limb squirrels.

Anybody else have an opinion on this topic?  I would like to welcome everyone's opinion equally (no personal attacks).

this is why you have to pick your shot and maybe let several go with out shooting. I try and only shoot at one when he is on the tree trunk this way the tree will take the hit. In very heavy wooded land i dont worry too much because the trees  branches and leaves behind will slow the bullet down very fast. If you are that worried why not just stay with the 12 ga?

I have to relate to you how ridiculous the Maryland DNR is.  I live in a county that only allows shotgun to hunt deer.  I was trying to determine what I could legally use to hunt squirrel.  I had to email the DNR to confirm that there are no restrictions on what I can hunt squirrel with, so long as the firearm is legal in MD.  In my reply to their response I said, "So let me get this straight... I can't shoot a deer from my treestand with a rifle, but if I wanted to shoot a squirrel off of a tree branch with say a .416 WBY Mag, that would be OK???"  The reply - "Yes".
Doin' my best to keep up with Maryland's one handgun a month law.

I agree with woodchuk. Most of the places i hunt it isn't safe to use a 22. So i stick to my  shotgun. This year i think i will try my Contender 22 barrrel.  Just have to be very careful with the shots i take.

I've got a Savage 22 over 20 ga so I can take my pick.  I like to use 22 short hp rounds.  They don't make much noise and lose their energy quickly.  Squirrels will strart moving again much quicker after firing the short then the long rifle or 20ga.
