My Ruger 77 (tang safety) in 257 Roberts is one of my favorite rifles. The Roberts is a fine deer cartridge. I handload for mine.

Ditto on the Ruger tang safety.  Mine was mad in '89 but when I got it a couple years ago it was in like-new condition - didn't even have scratches in the bluing under the safety, something I fixed in the first week or two.

Very accurate.  With a Leupold Vari-X III 4.5-14x it has become my favorit coyote rifle.  75g V-MAX a little over 3600fps, 120g Grand Slam and Partition at 2900fps, 115g TSX breaks 3000fps.  +P loads and brass.

Again Ruger but mine's the MKII. Shoots well. It's heaver than it needs to be for the Roberts but then all full size bolt guns are. I've only shot one doe with it, using a 100gr Nosler BT at a little over 3000 fps. One shot she went straight down.

I have used the .257 all my life. I have Rem. 722 made in 1956 and a Ruger tang safty made in 1970. I still have the paper work on it. I called Ruger a while back and they said they didn't make the .257 till 1972. I ordered the .257 through a dealer so I guess Ruger made me one. I have hand loaded since 1960. I have a 2.5x8 Weaver made in 1960 on the 722 and a 15 power Unertl on the ruger made in 1970. Carl L.

I have recently purchased .257 Roberts in a remington mountain rifle, rifle in like new condition, probably never fired.  I put a 2.5 x 8 Leupold on it and have sighted it in with some factory ammo.  The accuracy is nothing to get excited about.  I have purchased some 115grain Nosler Partitions which is the brand I use in my other rifles and will probably use IMR 4350 though I do have some H4831 on hand.  I have also heard about good results with 100 and 115 grain TSX's.  Hopefully I will get the rifle out blacktail hunting this year.

Never overlook a Browning BLR in .257.  Stays right about an inch with my Ken Waters handloads and critters just lay down dead.

I've got a Remington 700 Classic in 257 Roberts, with a Leupold Vari-X II. Guy wanted to sell it for $250, with reloading dies, and I just couldn't pass it up. I don't hunt with it much, it's too pretty.

I have shot  few mule deer with a light weight Ruger 77 RL MarkII.   I reloaded a Nosler 115 Gr BT bullet on top of 40.5 Gr of IMR 4350 powder in a RP case with a Fed 210 primer.

I Bought my son one used for his 12th birthday, he turned 39 2 weeks ago.  Don't know how many deer it's killed, even I shot 3 with it.  It is the old model tang safety, great gun.  His son is now laying claim to it.

My .257 Roberts is a Ruger Number one B.  I have a Burris 2x7 Variable on it. It shoots my handloaded 100 grain Remington core-lokt and Hornady interlocks to exact same point of aim, and if I don't let the barrel get too hot I can shoot sub 2 inch groups with it at 200 yards. But it does walk if it gets warm, but for the first two shots it is not a worry.

Had my sporterized 1891 Argentine Mauser that I've owned since the 1960s rebarreled to .257 Roberts late last year.  Love its light recoil and accuracy.

RossBay, don't give up on finding a blr in 257 roberts. They are around just pricy. In the latest edition of gun list there are 2 for sale. gunbroker had one a week ago. All it takes is money.  :) Byron

I really like the .257 Robts. as a nice low recoil round. Unfortunately I bought a Ruger Ultralight last year and after 2 trips back to Ruger resulting in a new barrel, I still can't feel confident in taking it hunting. It's a 2.5"-4" gun with factory or every combination of handload I've tried. As I said, love the round but the rifle is tradebait pending another call I'm waiting on from Ruger.

Mine is custom FN Mauser that I had built back in 1954. Currently, it has a Boyd's laminated thumb-hole stock, timney trigger, and a Leupold 3-9X Vari-X II (1968 vintage) scope. Also, has a Pfieffer barrel with a 1/11" twist. I used it mostly for Groundhogs in North Jersey in the 70's and now just to punch holes in paper. It was death on hogs with 75 grain Sierra HPs and still groups 5 shots in 1 moa. The .257 Roberts was and is a great cartidge :)

Rechambered a 7x57 Mauser to 257 Roberts and enjoy as do my non hunting friends thanks to the lower recoil.

I've lots of good things about this cartridge, I have 95 Chilean Mauser being rebarreled at this time and I can't wait to get it back and to the range. It will take care of Texas Whitetails easily.

I built one for my brother but haven't got around to shoot it with him yet.  I had a 25" heavy barrel and a commercial mauser action.  it had a nice piece of wood.  it is a heavy rifle with that pipe on there, but it is well ballenced and steady even offhand.

I really like the cartridge.  There are a few cartridges that are as close to perfect for hunting just about anything I hunt.  the 6.5 swede, 257 rob, 7x57, 260, 7-08.  Enough power, great bullet selection, flat shooting, low recoil.  Enough power to shoot just about anything at any range I should be shooting at.  Nice efficient rounds and a plesure to shoot.

Get one, you will not regret it and you will not look back.  2 boxes of 300wm cures my itch to shot for a while.  Get a 257 bob, and if it shoots well, you can use it for anything from coyote to deer to black bear!

Sorry to hear G8R had bad luck with his Ruger. My M77RL ultralight .257 is a wonderful rifle. I have a Leupold M8 4x lightweight scope on it & handling is light & nimble. Accuracy with Hornady 117 gr. SST Light Magnums is acceptable for hunting. I will now start to work up hand loads to see if some custom tailored rounds will shrink the group size. The .257 Roberts is an ideal low recoil deer cartridge.

I just got a call from Ruger that they are shipping my 77 Ultralight back after only 2 weeks. She said they fixed the barrel (didn't specify what fixed meant) and replaced the stock due to a chip around the tang. The stock was fine when I shipped it. The last 2 times I sent it in it was 2-3 months turn around. I'm hoping for the best but........,only shooting it will tell.

I've been to the range twice since I got it back. All I can say is I will take it to the next gun show and dump it (sell or trade). I have become a fan of this cartridge and would certainly be will to own another .257 but there aren't many available out there.

g8r -

Sorry to hear about your problems.  My Ruger 22" (not an ultra light) shoots wonderfully.  As in 0.95" at 200 yards with the right load.  I floated the barrel and tuned the trigger, no bedding or any other mods.

3D, it was advertized on another forum. After contacting the owner turns out we live in the same state so we were able to do a FTF sale. The gun was in very high condition also. I did pay a premium for it, which over the life of the gun will hardly be worth mentioning. At least thats the way I view it. Byron  ;D

coyote--
I wish it had a happy ending also but a rifle that avgs. 2"-4" isn't acceptable. I didn't even have high expectations for it. If it would have stayed consistant at around 1.5" I would have made it a keeper. As I told the folks at Ruger, I can get 2" groups from a 30-30 or 45-70 and even 1.25" with my M1A with open sights so I expect more from a modern scoped bolt gun even in a lightweight configuration.
