Do you believe that it is necessary to "break in" a new barrel? If so is there a standard process?

IMO, it isn't really necessary to break in a barrel unless you plan on using it for competitions or in a situation where you would be making long distance shots faster than the barrel can cool down. I break in all my barrels for the sole purpose of being prepared. It takes some time, but you never know when it will pay off.

You can go to the individual barrel makers websites and get their take on 'barrel breakin'. I personally think its a waste of time for the average Joe shooting the average hunting rounds.

I agree with both posts above. I never broke in any of my barrels in 30 years of shooting and have rifles capable of sub MOA groups.

I have rifles that I have "broken in" and those that I havn't. I cant tell any appreciable difference between them. Although my two most accurate rifles were never "broken in" KN

One good reason to break in a barrel is it might stay clean longer. At least clean it every shot for the first ten rounds or so.
