Anyone familiar with Wild West Guns[Anchorage,AK] 457Magnum conversion of Marlin 1895s? Is there a significant enough improvement in ballistics/ energy to be worth the $299+shipping?

In a word, no. I have a 1895 in 45/70 and am able to get very close to thier performance of the 457. The main problem with the 457 conversion is that you have to use thier brass, which is expensive and sometimes hard to come by. I like wild west gun parts, most of my after market stuff comes from them but if you can't do it with 1925fps with a 405gr kodiak JSP then pushing it an extra 75-100fps isn't going to make a difference. My go to load is with starline brass and 405gr kodiak JSP at 1925fps with H322 powder. Excellent load, below max and all the performance you can sqeeze out of the 1895 platform.

Thanks for the information.I'm planning on getting a 1895GS 45/70
In the blued version,I've used a maximum charge of 42.0gr IMR4198 and a Hornady 350gr flatpoint JSP.With the Williams receiver sight,I sight in for +3" at 50 yards.
I have a disinclination towards proprietary brass/cartridges[expensive,hard to find],althouggh when WWG said one could also use standard 45/70.
The extra $300+ feels a mite steep for the extra performance from the conversion.

If you use starline brass you can come very close to 457 advertized velosities. YOu have to start a few grs lower than you would with winchester brass though. I'm sold on 405grJSP remington bulk bullets for practice and kodiak bonded for hunting.
