Bought some HS-7
« on: June 19, 2006, 09:33:56 PM »
I've been having trouble with accuracy using my USFA 45 Colt so I went to the guns store today and picked up a 1LB can of HS-7 (which I now learn is discontinued).  Anyway, there's a dearth of loads for this powder using the 240-250 gr. LSWC and I'm hope'n somebody here can give me a starting load so I can get started using it up.  The load posted on the container is for a JHP and lists a velocity of 1300+ fps and that's too hot for my gun.  I went to the Handloads website but it was not much help.  Any input will be appreciated.

I'd start down around 11.1 grains.  And if you like the powder, you better go out and buy all you can get.

Dusty, Speer # 10 lists loads for HS-7, but only in the Ruger section.  14.0 is the start, but as you said you have a Colt clone.  I have used this powder with good results, but only in a S&W.  I never had good luck getting it to burn with lighter charges, maybe you will have better luck.  I suspect it's a little slow for lower velocity loads.  I don't know where you should start for the gun you have, but thought at least some data might help.  Speer says no Ruger listed loads are over 25000,C.U.P.  which is as you know is still hotter than recommended for Colts.  Hope this helps.

Dusty,
I saw your original post in another section and had to wait to reply(it got locked). I've been using 5.1gr of Clays behind a 250gr Rn n my ruger. Quite comfortable and not hot. This load is from Lee. Out of my BH I'm getting pretty decent groups. I started reloading some more last nite because my wife shot up the last 100 rounds that I had at the steel plates on our range. Like I said, comfortable and accurate. She had a ball making those plates ring at 10-30 yds.

I use 6.1 gr. of Tightgroup and a Remington 2 1/2 primer in Winchester cases for my 240 gr SWC loads. In the Ruger 7 1/2" barrel it gives 888fps and good groups. At least good for me groups.

Dusty,
According to the Hodgdon#26 manual, you can start with 13.0gr at 822fps and stop with 14.0gr at 900fps. This is listed for either the 240 or250gr bullets. It doesn't say whether this data was with castor jacketed bullets. CUP was 14,400 with starting load and 16,000 with max load.

Hope this helps ya some.
These loads are for Colts and their clones. There are some pretty interesting loads for Rugers and TCs.
