357 max loads
« on: June 20, 2006, 09:28:16 AM »
can some of you guys hit me up with some of your favorite 357 max loads.  I would like a couple.  Something heavy to use on whitetail and also something lighter for longer range.

Thanks

.357 Remington Maximum - http://ammoguide.com/?catid=66

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After the .38 Special was "stretched" into the .357 Magnum and became such a commercial success, it was probably only a matter of time until the logical next step would be attempted: the .357 Remington Maximum. In 1983, several industry giants were looking at elongating the .357 Magnum case, and the final result was commercialized by Remington.

It actually looked better on paper than in application. Soon after release, it was discovered that .357 Maximum revolvers of all makes, when used with .357 Maximum factory ammunition, were experiencing excessive gas cutting of the forcing cone within 1000 rounds, a rather annoying interaction between cylinder gaps and ultra-high pressure/velocity cartridges.

Several manufacturers came up with novel solutions; for example, Wesson Arms discounted 2nd and 3rd barrels if the customer needed them. Note that Maximum revolvers will shoot standard .357 Magnum ammunition. Current factory ammo sports a 158 gr. bullet at 1825 fps with 1168 ft-lbs from a 10 inch barrel.

  * HODGDON H-110 CHARGE REDUCTION WARNING
H110 Loads should not be reduced more than 3%.
Reduce H110 Loads 3% and work up from there. H110 if reduced too
much will cause inconsistent ignition. In some cases it will lodge a
bullet in the barrel, causing a hazardous situation (Barrel Obstruction).
This may cause severe personal injury or death to users or bystanders.
DO NOT REDUCE H110 LOADS BY MORE THAN 3%.

How's that barrel shooten for ya? Good I hope, the single best hunting load using a jacketed bullet I came up with was the Hornady 180 XTP over 26 grains of 1680, the bullet seated to the first cannalure from the base. Load gives an average velocity of 2060 from fps several Handi barrels, (including yours) and it has killed more than it's share of game, I took one deer with it, Hellacatcher took 3, one of which was at 150 yards app. Do a search for posts by he or I and I'm sure you'll find lots more info about that laod. Send me a PM with your email, I'll send you a whole file of 357 Max data. As jacketed bullets go, I believe you'll find it hard to beat the Hornady 180 XTP, it performs well beyond expectaion.

I didn't ask the original question.... but I do want to thank ddhotbot and JPH45 for supplying some recipes.

I have not had time to work up any loads in my Max yet, just been shooting loads that somebody gave me, and 357 mags... but I'm starting to think I'll be spending some time at the bench with this latest information.

Thanks again guys!  :D  :D  :D

Cheers
