Aluminum ramrod
« on: June 21, 2006, 03:42:44 PM »
Where is a good source for an aluminum ramrod in 5/16?  This is for a .36 caliber and I prefer it aluminum rather than wood or fiberglass.  The only place on the internet I can find is BH Tool in Oregon but don't know anything about their rods.  Also I don't have the proper tools to make one myself.  Thank you for any information.

I made an aluminum ramrod for my muzzleloader.  Got the stock from a local farm/ranch store.  Look in the area they sell welding and metal materials.  I made mine for a .50 using 3/8 round stock but I remember they had thinner stuff.  It comes in 48 inch lengths and if I remember right the price was less than $5.00.
Thanks,

use a muzzle protector with aluminum rod

If you are going to use an aluminum ramrod please consider a muzzle protector to protect the crown when landing. The use of a muzzle protector may not be practical for hunting, however you should always use one for practice sessions. All aluminum immediately oxidizes upon ANY machining including initial rolling in size, and ALUMINUM OXIDE is what they use to make GRINDING WHEELS very abrasive stuff

Aluminum, being so soft, also embeds dirt / grit.  Use only with a muzzle protector ala Tradegun.
