9.3X62 FS velocities
« on: June 22, 2006, 05:13:59 PM »
A 9.3X62 FS is on my list, does anyone have chrono #'s for this barrel length?  I assume all the data I see is for the longer standard rifles, and wondered what the difference was.  I am primarily interested in the heavier weight bullets. I'll pick he FS regardless, (they look great), but was just wondering.  Thanks.

Data I've seen is for a 24 inch barrel.
The CZ FS has a 20.5 inch barrel, 3.5 inches shorter.
One thing about larger bores, they tend to lose less speed per inch
of barrel than smaller calibers do.
In theory, I'd say you would not lose more than 100 feet per second
as opposed to a 24 inch barrel. That's figuring 25 feet per second
per inch. ( 87.5 fps according to the math. )
In reality, you could take two rifles with the same barrel
length, and see more variation than that between the two.
So for all practical purposes, I think it's no big deal in this instance.
Even if we double that estimate ( 50 fps per inch ), you're looking
at 175 feet per second tops.
Now, it is also known that there are "fast" barrels, and "slow"
barrels, so the end result is really a crap shoot.
That's the best I can tell you.

CyberSniper, thanks for the reply.  I wasn't sure if any of you guys that own one had chronoed any loads yet.  I had heard (and seen), the same thing about the big bores and speed.  You are correct about the "fast and slow" barrels.  When  I clocked my from the reloading manual handloads in my .416 Rigby, I thought something was wrong, I even checked case head expansion to see if they were too hot, they weren't.  I finally called Hodgden, and they told me I just had a "fast" barrel, and it happens all the time.  It doesn't hardly ever happen to me, usually just the opposite!  Thanks for the info

You're welcome.
I have to say though, that it looks like you already knew
"the answer". You just wanted to hear it from somebody else.
hehe ':)'

9.3x62CZ FS, Custom Nosler Ammunition
« Reply #4 on: June 26, 2006, 03:02:34 AM »
I bought some custom ammo from Nosler 9.3x62 in a Balistic tip.  The ballistics on the box show muzzle velocity at 2550fps.  Sight in 2.1 inches high at 100yds., dead on at 200yd., and down about 9 inches at 300yds.

They said to use balistic tips for most game in North America and Partitions for African game.  I questioned this for Moose and Elk and he said no the Balistic tip are just fine.  Stil a little concerned about that?
Just some more information.  Flattened a 400lb Black Bear with a Previ-Partisan 285gr conventional bullet.  Thanks  Buckfever

Buckfever, it sounds like you are enjoying jour 9.3.  I have 2 CZ's right now, a .416 Rigby, and a 6.5X55 FS.  I wouldn't part with either of them.  Of all the guns I have bought in the last few years, only the CZ's have been good right out of the box.  All the others needed to be sent back to the factory.  As soon as I can I will add a 9.3 FS.  I hope I enjoy mine as much as you do.
