sabot loads

I have a Sidekick with a 26" barrel and it is hard to load saboted bullets. I have tried 3 different brands and all are very tight. Has anybody else run into this? I'm thinking of trying all lead bullets, any suggestions?

Pretty much all sabots will load tight. You can use bore butter and they will load easier.  Powerbelts will load easier as will many of the conicals.  But as far as accuracy the sabots in my gun will out group these other easy to load loads by a lot. I take a patch with borebutter on one side run down and out, flip it over down and out with the clean side, then load the sabot it will load much easier, this also keeps the barrel clean between shots and will help accuracy.

coop2564, is coorect most can be very tight. That is why you need to clean the barrel often and use a clean burning powder. I know when I have used black powder in the past its really difficult to seat a sabot after the third shot.

This is my 4th muzzle loader and by far the hardest to load. From day one with a squeaky clean bore you really have to bear down to load it. I have only shot 777 thru it so far. I'm gonna try Coops suggestion of bore butter next time out. Do you guys have any experience with power belts or conicals? I'm thinking of trying one or the other depending on feedback.

45/70fan, what type of bullet/sabot, combination are you using? Triple 7 is a fairly clean burning powder. I know with pyrodex pellets and 240 grain XTP bullets with T/C mag sabots or 250 grain Shock-Wave T/C Sabot bullet combination I can get a less four shots off before they are hard to get down the barrel. Have you tried Powerbelts?

I have tried the Shockwave 250's, Hornady prepack XTP 240's, and cheap green sabots with 240 Nosler HP 44 mag bullets. The Shockwaves are accurate but you really have to force them down. I have not tried powerbelts yet. I'm up in the air between them and something like Hornady Great Plains. I wonder if I just got a first run barrel with a new cutter and the bore is on the small spec side.

I have had great success on deer with 295 powerbelts... 4 shots on 4 bucks all resulted in dead deer. My initial range session was cloverleaf at 50 yards, using 90gr 777. I put a small Tasco turkey scope far up on
the factory base, and I have a terrific deer rig.
Also, .490 roundball with .10 pillow ticking is a real good easy to load accurate start. I would have confidence in hunting this load as well!
I did not like sabots in my Huntsman. Felt like I was about to snap the rod each time I jammed those down!

I used bore lap compound to smooth the bore It polishes the bore and lessen resistance.  Help considerably also a lot of shooting helps.

i make my own bullets ...got a tc mold in 50 cal....kind of pointed bullet shot good   if you want to try a few ill sendum to you??????jb

Same thing here.. I was loading a few sabots after I bought my BRAND NEW T/c Omega thumbhole camo.. It was resting on my boot, and I was shoving the sabot down the barrel.. It was so hard that it slipped and the gun barrel rubbed straight across the side of the cement shooting bench.. She's got scratches galore now.. Oh well, it's a gun  ::)

Wow, i must be a lucky guy, My sidekick is pretty easy to start and seat sabots. As a matter of fact, I usually do not have to use a short starter at all, I can start the bullet/sabot to flush with the barrel with heavy thumb pressure. Although, I do have pretty tough fingers and thumbs!  after starting them by thumb, I usually just choke up on the rod(firm grasp about 4 or 5 inches above the muxxle, and send the bullet home with smooth short pushes(i.e. I choke up 4 or 5 more inches at a time until the bullet/sabot is firm against the powder charge.  With app shockeys gold powder I can do this all day without even patching between shots.
