Which one would u pick if you reload your own for mule deer and antelope?

For mule deer and maybe antelope, I would prefer a heavier bullet(at lest 140). So ballisticlly speaking I would go would with the 270wsm, if the choice was only one rifle. However I have one of each cal. and like them both. The 270wsm retains much more down range energy.

25-06@ 400yrds with 110 Accubond or TSX = a little over 1200 ft lbs energy
270wsm @ 400 yrds with 140 Accubond = about 1860 ft lb energy

270wsm probally best overall, but the 25-06 is not at all a bad second

They both are more very good. I would use the 270WSM for Elk, but that was not the question. As far as the 140 goes, why?? Sectional density of
a 140 gr. 270cal. is .261 & the sectional density of a 25-06 120gr. is .260.

I guess that alot of folks don't know that, but that is the numbers, which means that a 25-06 120Gr. Part. fired at the same vel. as a 270WSM 140 gr. Part. will have the exact same penetration!!!

Both are great & neither are marginal, take your pick!

nomo, I know better than to try and outwizz ya, If ya know what I mean!!!!! LOL.
However, not a big differance, but most records show that the 270wsm shooting 140 grs and the25-06 shooting 120 grs, the 270wsm is still 200-300 fps faster. Maybe JUST maybe giving it the SLIGHT edge.

Your stated difference is about right with factory loads. We need to remember that WSM pressures run higher than 25-06 & belted mag. rounds, part of a way to sell the new rounds. So, if you buy factory you
would be looking at about 150-200FPS difference & if you don't reload it
is a factor to consider, however for the subject of Antelope & Deer it is
mainly academic.

However, if you reload to equal pressures these two with the stated bullets will be within 100FPS & that is the ONLY ammo I shoot. With my 25-06AI with 125 Wildcats, it is a little flatter than any available 270WSM 140,
& with the long shank the energy is close indeed.

I shoot both, I prefer the 270 WSM , really a very accurate and very flat shooting caliber........

I have found a 7WSM Coyote really worth the money, sure not needed for
Deer or Antelope, but I am looking to buy it & play with it a little. Due to the slightly diff. case, it has more cap. & will out run the 270WSM & has higher BC bullets for sure. I probably won't keep it long.

Talking about deer and antelope, it's either/or. In fact you could even throw in lighter bullets. Everything being talked about generally shoots thru deer and antelope anyway. If the bullets penetrate completely, it doesn't seem to me that sectional density matters. The bullet kills the deer inside the deer, not out the otherside! There it just flys away and at some point falls on the ground, hopefully!

If your going to reload, I'd bet I could find a lot more cases for making 25-06 rounds out of than 270 WSM rounds; cheaper too!
