I am looking for a new stock set for the contender. Right now I'm looking at the Boyd's laminated stock and foreend probably in nutmeg. They are listing the price at $68 for the set. Seems pretty good for both price and looks. Any other suggestions? My only limiting factor is that I a lefty and gotta have something to accomodate a backwards shooter.

I have one in pepper laminate and I really like it.  I also think that it is ambidextrous or close to it.  At worst you could sand out a palm swell on the other side and refinish it.  I think that you can actually order their finishing stuff from them.  Look on the website or just ask when you call to order.  Mine looks really cool.  Daniel

$68 is not for the set. it is only the stock(part#400-101). the crazy thing is, they don't make the fore-end any more(part#401-404). it doesn't make sense to make a stock but not the fore-end. you can order a pepper laminate blank fore-end, but carving it out would be very hard unless you have all the tools to do it with.

I was worried about that and sent them an e-mail about it. The response I got said it was for the whole set. I'll try them again and double check on that. I'll post when I get the response. Thanks.

i called and talked to a guy there yesterday and he told me that the $68 was the stock only. he said they were talking about making the fore-end sometime in the future and he would call me if they did. when you go to the website and look at that stock, click on it and it will open another window with a larger picture of the stock and fore-end. there are two seperate part numbers for the two beside the picture. you can always order that stock and order a fore-end from vv.

Its really too bad this auction didn't go off a week later.  Look soon, because e-bay only keeps closed auctions up for a limited time.

IMHO this is a very attractive sock, and if I were a southpaw I'd have  been all over it....

You can't go wrong with a stock set from Bullberry, even their so called Utility grade wood is superior to most other companies regular offerings.   His forends also "float" the barrel and usually add some precision even to factory barrels.   Check them out before you buy... (yes, Fred is a personal friend, but his products speak for themselves).   Ladobe

BTW - her's my latest "utility" stock set from Fred.  :wink:  About a year old now, its a one of a kind to dedicate the prototype 17HMR Contender and the first privately owned one worldwide (he spoils me rotten).

I like the looks of the Contender, wish I had one. I have a Contener but not in the 17HMR. :P

I alos like the looks of the shooting table. Would mind posting some info about it, as I would like to build my self one. :P

Check out www.gunstocksinc.com They list semi-finished left handed thumbhole walnut stocks for 85.00, and another 25.00 for a forend. I got one of their stock sets a few weeks ago and I am very happy with it. It took quite a bit of sanding and I put seven coats of Tru oil on it and I feel it rivals any finished stock I have looked at. I would put a picture of my .222 carbine up, but I cant figure out how!

Fred does have nice walnut and is generous. My contender carbine set I paid the extra $50 for one step up and got 10 steps up.

I have a Boyd's laminate set in nutmeg that i got about 1 year ago, It'll do, and the price was right, and I'm not afraid to beat it up in the woods. It needed some work when I got it, LOP is kinda short so I added a recoil pad, and the forend required some sanding to fit my bull barrels, but for durability and usability it's not bad.

But when I wanted to set up a contender carbine for my wife I called Fred at Bullberry and ordered a finished Utility walnut stock cut to fit her.  What I got was much better that what I would consider utility grade. It's one beautiful stock.  It cost a little more than twice as much but is ten times nicer than what I got from Boyds.  The comb and palm swell are really nice touches and make it one comfortable looking stock. I would live to buy one for myself, but I could never bring myself to take it any farther than the rifle range. I might get one some day but I'd have to beg Fred to make it as ugly as possible but from what I've seen I don't think he could make an ugly set  :wink:
