Which powder for a 41 Magnum?
« on: June 26, 2006, 04:25:42 PM »
I got my Model 83 in 41 Magnum with a 7.5" barrel last week.  I just ordered some brass, dies, and bullets and I am wondering which powder would be best.  I initially plan on using the Hornady 210 grain XTP.  Which powder gives good velocity, excellent accuracy, and burns clean?  Eventually I want to try some heavier bullets.  Does anyone make a jacketed bullet heavier than 210 grains?  I like the looks of the Winchester 240 grain bullet, but it does not appear to be available for reloading.  Does Winchester make the bullet or does someone make it for them?

H-110, Winchester 296, and Lil Gun all do well.
The Hodgdon manual shows a 220 grain jacketed bullet made by Speer.
Cast bullet load data up to 265 grains are also shown in
the Hodgdon manual.
Hodgdon's online data is more limited, but here's the link:

For the faster loads, I use H110, W296, Blue Dot, AA#9, 2400, and Lil' Gun. All will do what you want when loaded with the 210gr.XTP. Speer makes the 220gr.SP with the half jacket. There is a guy that contacted me a while back saying he's hand-swaging 250gr.FN jacketed bullets. I'll dig around and try to find the message again. I can't vouch for him now as I haven't tried any of his product, yet. You could have Hawk put a cannelure on one of their heavy .41 bullets but it may be expensive. I'll keep my nose in the wind about these items.

Got to finally do some chronographing the other day:

Freedom Arms .41 Magnum 6" barrel that is Mag-Na-Ported

220 Speer JSWCSP/23.0 H110/1545 fps

220 Speer JSWCSP/13.0 Blue Dot/1240 fps

255 CPBC WFNGC/22.0 H110/1360 fps

300 Specialty Pisol Gear/19.0 H110/1260 fps

Same loads from a Gary Reeder Custom 5.5" Ultimate .41 Hunter

220 Speer/1450 fps

220 Speer/1200 fps

255 CPBC/1325 fps

300 Specialty/1241 fps

Competition Electronics chronograph at 6' from the muzzle. Three shot average. The extreme spred on any of the loads from the FAs gun was 30 fps. From the Reeder gun 55 fps.

No clue why the FA gun liked the 220 Speer/H110 load so well and the Reeder gun didn't. Velocity was 1546,1540,1549 for the FA and 1459,1475,1417 for the GR. The other three loads are what I would have expected the difference in guns to be because of the FAs tighter chambers, flashgap and 1/2" longer barrel even with the Mag-Na-Port slots.

..and this poster has some real good loads for FAs .41s...
