30 Carbine Blackhawk Load Development
« on: June 27, 2006, 04:40:51 AM »
The local indoor range banned me from shooting full power 30 Carbine loads in my Blackhawk due to excessive muzzle blast.  In my late model hand stamped Inland and Blackhawk I was using 14gr of H-110 under a 110 Speer JSP with very good results.  Looking thru the Speer manual, I noted in the handgun section for the 30 Carbine loads using 4.5 to 5.5gr of UNIQUE under the 100gr Plinker and 110gr Varmiter (sp).  I loaded up 50 rounds using the Plinker over 4.5gr of Unique with very good accuracy at the full distance of the indoor range 15 yards, POI was 1.5” high.  Loading another 50 rounds using 5.5gr of Unique brought the POI down to where I wanted it shooting out a 1.5” bullseye using a 6 o’clock.  The report of the 4.5gr loads was very mild, like that of the 38 Special, while the 5.5gr loads were in the 38 Special +P mild 357 Mag range.  I have my doubts about trying these loads in my carbine for fear of getting a bullet stuck in the barrel.  But, for the purpose of being able to enjoy my 30 carbine Blackhawk at the indoor range they are a lot of fun.

If you don't cast bullets buy commercial cast .311/.312 SWC made for the 32-20 or there are some commercial cast 115-120 gr .309 bullets available. Load them over the same 4.5 or 5.5 gr Unique loads and enjoy.
