Looking for a new .44 Mag.

I am thinking of adding a .44mag to the collection.  This handgun will be used for hunting deer / boar and taking to the range.  I also plan to scope it with a Leupold (2x)

I have Rugers (.22, .38, .41), S&W (two .357’s, .38, .22) and T/C’s(.22, .22mag, .223, .243, 7mm-08 and .44) and was looking at the following handguns.  Any thoughts / opinions are greatly appreciated.

S&W:

The choices you have listed, I would go with the Model 629 Light Hunter Revolver. I t seems like the best to fit your needs.

Just got the Model 629 Light Hunter myself and am really liking it.  It is set up with iron sights, laser grips, and using Warne Quick Release Rings I also have it ready to quickly go with my Bushnell Elite 3200 2x6x32 and my Bushnell Red/Green Dot scopes.

As I learn to shoot it I am assured the scopes line up each time.  My thinking is for stand hunting I will use the magnifying scope, for still hunting, the dot scope or the iron sights/laser grips.

Laser grips work out to 10 yards in daylight and further early or at dusk.  I should be good with irons out to 25 yards, dot to 50 and to 100 eventually with the Elite 3200.

My new holster rig from Edge Custom (www.edgecustom.com) carries very well and handles the Model 29 (and other revolvers) with or without the scope.  

Handloads in the mid-ranges make the .44 magnum a pleasure to shoot and I am ready to enjoy the woods as we look towards fall.  Went out today since it was only 85 in central Oklahoma and had a great morning walking with my new rig.

Either of the three mentioned would be an excellent choice.  My preference runs to the Smith and Wesson revolvers with a recommendation for either.  JMHO.  Mikey.

I really like those bisley hunters, that is my first recommendation, but the 629 doesn't lack anything.

:cb2: I agree. The Bisley Hunter would be my first choice. I am a big SA fan however. I like the strength and the ease in cleaning a SA gun. It can also handle loads that I would never try in a S&W. However, if I had to "settle" for a 629, I'd still be a happy camper!  :grin:

I have the 629 6-1/2" ported revolver. It is my understanding that the Light Hunter is more accurate, 100+ yards. I read that this is a general condition of Performance Center guns. I pretty much figure I'm limited to 50 yards at most. I have my eye on the Light Hunter, and another 50-75 yards of range. I was flip-floping between the Light Hunter and the 627, 8 shot Performance Center .357 magnum. I opted to go with the 627 first .... I'll save up once more and then get the Light Hunter.

If you get it, post your opinion please.

Mark I would look at the Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter in .44 mag or .45 Colt.  I went with the .45 Colt and have never looked back. 

I will not say a bad word about the 629 S&W.  This is my first hunting handgun and it served me well.  It is your choice though, good luck.

I know you said you was thinking of a 44 mag, Here's my thought, Either a 44 mag or a 45 colt in ruger would work great. I have many Rugers and am parcel to the bisleys in either caliber. I have rather large hands and the Bisleys seem to work best for me  ..........Joe.............
