dumb question..? I bought 3 MLs this month, which to keep?

I bought a TC Renegade off the classifieds, then a couple of days later found a TC New Englander at a gunshow (cheap) then a CVA Bobcat, also cheap...

I haven't yet fired any of them.

But I'm soliciting opinions from y'all about these various guns. I don't have any specific plans for them (hunting, re-enacting, whatever) I just figured my home wasn't complete without a muzzle loader of some kind.

In my opinion you bought the best of the three on your first try...... the Renegade.   I own two Renegade lefties, a 50 and a 54.
I had a New Englander and it was a good solid gun and my son has a Bobcat, not bad for the money.

Sure  Set triggers, American black walnut stock, the ability to change out the barrel in a few seconds the wide varitey of barrels from TC as well as Green Mt. the availability of parts, life time warrenty to the original owner made in the US. and first hand experience!......Jim

 yep i would agree .

  the part about the life time  warrenty though, as far as i know is to anyone, not just the original owner unless TC has change things  in the last few months

Well, my Renegade doesn't have set triggers, only one, so that is not going to be a factor. And the New Englander is also by TC so can I assume the warranty is the same? Are parts not as common for the New Englander?

I think what you have is known as a Renegade hunter.

I have a Renegade from the mid to late eighties and it has the set triggers, and a fine trigger system it is indeed!

 I'm not sure when Thompson switched from the Renegade to the Renegade hunter......

Either way, it's still a fine ML......

Well....What calibers are they??? If I remember right the New Englander is a 50 with a octagon to round barrel....If the Renegade is a .54 I would lean to that, just because I prefer a .54 for deer...Do you plan to deer hunt with them??? I have a buddy that has used the Bobcat for years...It shoots well, he likes it....

I would keep them all....Shoot them and then decide....Depends on which one shoots the best....Do you plan to shoot round ball or conicals or sabots????
By shooting before you decide you will also see which one fits you best and possibly which one is more reliable, without fine tuning...

I would answer these questions first...Pattern each and then sell in the fall, when they will bring a better price....

I should have mentioned - they are all .50 cal.

And yup, shooting them is not a bad idea. (Whyd didn't I think of that? :shock:) Unfortunately other things are taking up time right now.

I only asked originally because I wondered if there was/is anything inherently different among the guns that more experienced BP types would mention.

I hope to hunt BP in the fall, but again lots of other things are demanding my time (and $$) and I may not be hunting this year at all... :cry:

My New Englander barrel is all round, not octagon to round. The Renegade is definitely a Renegade Hunter (thanks victorcharlie) and the Bobcat is, well a Bobcat.

Flintlock - good points to consider. I'll try to find some time to do so.

Sell them all and buy one good, honest, historically accurate rifle.  The T/C's, while excellent rifles and backed by an equally excellent warranty, are not historically accurate of anything, except circa 1975.

The Thompson/Center Renegade is a 26" barrel, 1" across the flats, 1 in 48" twist. It can be had in .50, .54, and .58 caliber from Fox Ridge Outfitters . You can also get accessary barrels, ( all interchangeable) from them.  The T/C New Englander came in .50, and .54 calibers. 24", and 26" barrels, 1 in 48" twist came with them. There is also a New Englander 12 guage Shotgun. All of these barrels are interchangable. You can still get accessary barrels for the New Englander from Fox Ridge, .50, and .54, in 26", and the 27" 12 guage shotgun barrel. I own Renegades in .54 caliber, both flint, and percussion, and they are great shooters. I also have the New Englander  with .50, and .54 caliber barrels. Again, a great shooter. I would not part with these fine muzzleloaders.

Yup, not so much into historical correctness at the moment. Just want to have some kind of muzzle loader in the house.

And not much into inlines either... so what I have is okay for now...

Keep the Renegade. The model you have is my all time favorite muzzle loader and if I ever manage to sell the Thunderhawk I have listed will be my only one. Not so long ago I had two Renegades one with double set and one with the single trigger. I prefer the single trigger and kept it and sold the other.  The only thing I'd change about it is some day I'd like a .54 RB barrel for it.

No brainer here... keep the Renegade. You can get aftermarket barrels for it too.

I have one of the CVA Bobcats. It might be ugly with it's synthetic stock, but with a little weight added to the hollow in the butt, and a set of good sights, you couldn't pry it from my cold, dead hands.
Send me the Renagade, or at least the barrel, my .56 smoothbore needs a rifled companion.  :wink:

I got a 50 cal. new englander ,liked it so much I  got one in 54 cal.
Then I  bought a Black MTN. barrel in 50 cal. with 1-28 twist for them for heavy loads for bear and boar.
I have hawkins and PA. rifles in percussion and flint also ,but the rifle that fits me best for hunting when a fast shot presents itself is the new englander hands down.
Try mounting each rifle fast and see which comes to your shoulder with the sights lined up the fastest.
BTW- if'n you do sell two of them rifles  :o
What muzzle loader you gone to buy with the money you got from the two you sell ???
You know one rifle isn't enough, once you start shooting black powder ;)
