Help me remember...
« on: June 29, 2006, 03:14:51 AM »
I'm trying to remember a guy's name.  He has been featured in several magazines and books.  He was a hunter/outdoorsman I think in the period between WWI and WWII.  He lived in the woods for several months using only a tarp for a shelter.  Famous guy... I've seen pictures of his camp sites and techniques.  Who was he?  I know I'm going to slap my head ala Homer Simpson when you tell me but right now my mental faculties are not completely there...

I looked him up and it wasn't him.  The guy I'm trying to think of had "at some point" an affiliation with the military maybe.  I see a picture in my head of him in front of a lean-to made with a canvas tarp with a fire in front of it.  It was a black/white photo.  I hope y'all don't think I'm crazy for just trying to remember weird stuff like this.  It's really for a Boy Scout research project for my son.  I can't remember this guy's name so my son can do the research.

:D Sorry I didn't get back sooner.  Townsend Whelen he is!  Many thanks and salutations!  Indeed a gentleman and obviously a scholar...  Lost my password and spent a whole day trying to find it or figure out how to get it back (long story...) so my handle is now  "no guns here" as opposed to "slide-flipper".  Not a bash on guns, just reflective of being stationed about 4000 miles from my guns... now my kid gets to figure out how to make his own Whelen style tent.

thanks again,
