Noise from an air rifle
« on: July 01, 2006, 03:46:17 PM »
As an urban varmint exterminator, I need to have an accurate and quiet air rifle.  Of all those air rifles that deliver 700+ fps velocity, which would you consider to be the quietest?

I believe you will find that a spring piston gun is the quietest.  The pneumatic pump ups have a noticeable crack.

Some are louder than others.  The AA 410ERB has a built in sound supressor and is pretty quiet.

my crosman 2200 and 766 don't make much noise. use a slingshot if you can. i do and have kill lots of thing like rats, coons, one yote and crows from 10-25 yards.

I shoot a RWS 54 in 22 cal. Its pushing 800 to 850 fps. Very accurate. The RWS 48 is allot cheaper with the same power.

What ever air rifle you get try this. Make sure the dogs are put in a room, the kids are at school and the wife is at work or shopping ;). open a window 8inches to a foot. get a nice gun rest several feet . (5 or more) inside a room facing the vermin. Your house will work to silence your air rifle.  It will sound loud inside with little to no noise outside. Good luck. PS don't shoot your window. LOL
There is no limit on what you can do, if you limit what you have been doing in the past.

Don't forget the barrel is an inch or two below the scope. That means the window rail won't show up when you sight in on that critter.
How do I know you ask? ;)
BTW-Shooting from inside the house is a pretty good & federally legal suppressor. I believe those laws apply to air rifles as well as firearms.
Also my .22 marlin rifle shooting CB shorts is way quieter than my RWS 48

This is what I use. All you really hear is the hammer hitting the valve(from bone conduction with your face against the stock). It''s not >700fps but it's 630 with a 16gr Webley Lazadome, has shot one 75 yard three shot group of just over 3/4".

If you had ever been to an airgun forum, you would recognize it as a QB 78 which is a Chinese copy of tyhe last variant Crosman 160(which ceased manufacture in early 1970s).

It had been tuned by Mac-1 airguns(google it as apparently this forum doesn't like posting links to places where you might learn something).

The QB can be purchased and dropo shipped to Mac-1 for tuning. I had mine done back before the Venom Custom Shop in England closed with the demise of Webley airguns and they were still shrouding QB barrels for Mac-1, so the quiet part of my gun is no longer available unless you could find someone parting with a QB with one already on it ,on the airgun classifieds(they turn up once in awhile). The stock is a Customwerkes LH QBf stock which may soon be available again.

The closest to it you could get to it in quiet today would be a Mac-1 LD MK 1 based on old Crosman MK 1 pistols and you can head shoot anthing such a shot would drop out to 50 yards with no pop.

This is a LD MK 1 with a Venom shrouded 13" HW barrel that can shoot under 1" groups at 50 yards(with a scope, not the red dot)

Been to airgun forums, but I just don't live on them.
I don't know all or even most airguns by sight, that's why I asked.
I've shot the old crosman pistol & it certainly pops.  I don't think anybody could hit much at 50 yards with it, much less drop it.

Spoken like a true "non expert" to put it nicely. Your ignorence of what modern pelletguns are capable of and likely your cheapness is speaking for you. A proper pelletgun can do alot that the other things ya mention can't. Shooting safely in urban settings with a proper pellet gun is one area where they do excell. I do find alot of folk who know little or lack the funds  and/or the foiresight and ability to see the benefits respond as you do here. The items yopu mentioned have thier places but to say they are better choices across the board is just ignorant...

Paul, the person you addressed this to is or purports to be at least a youth of as best as I can determine 13 to 14 years age at most. At various times he has claimed to be less. They have also posted to tell is they are black for whatever reason they felt the need to share that. Supposedly from a city in FL but at other various times claims to have enough experience with enough guns to lay most of us to shame. Me thinks the youth part is correct based on my reading of numerous posts by them. Me also thinks a bit of wild bragging and pretense of knowledge and experience not yet gained is also involved.

Many times this poster has come very close to me ending the membership for such actions. I still don't know where to stand on them, quite a few of their posts have elicted responses like yours.

hmm, after thinking in it for a while i remembered a couple that might fit the bill.  first off, as a few others have said already, springers are generally pretty quiet.  the talon ss is a pcp rifle, but has a barrel shroud that dampens majority of the "pop" when fired;  the logun s-16 fac is very similar.  basically, if you want a non-springer look for one with some kind of barrel shroud; it is pretty much a legal silencer.  or, you could buy/make a silencer for whatever air rifle you want to use, and pay $200 to get it licensed with the atf.  you have lots of options.  some people have even made their own barrel shrouds; these are perfectly legal without any kind of license.

about 20 yrs ago i purchased a sheridan pneumatic in .20 cal...was very quiet at 4 pumps..a lil louder and much more potent with 8. i shot this gun in the backyard of my very quiet neighborhood growing up. unfortunatly my youthfull urges led me quickly to pumping it 20 or more times..sounded just like a .22 lr...hit like it too..till i screwed up a valve inside. remarkably i fired many hundreds if not over a thousand over powered shots like this before it started making a strange sound when being fired and losing air pressure quickly after pumping. still have it but havent seen the .20 pellets anywhere recently....anyhow what all my rambling is leading to is that a pump pneumatic is great as a variable power gun...only a few pumps when its very quiet..max it out when the neighbor is running his lawn mower..just dont overpower it. :)

There are several on the market that come with a factory-installed moderator that is permanently affixed to the barrel. You might look at Airguns of Arizona for some of the BSA Airguns they sell. You can actually get yourself a QB-78 from several locations and make your own mod for the end of it. Check your legal issues before you do this.

A spring or gasram gun has most of the noise coming from the action of the gun, and not the blast of air from the projectile. The sound may not be close enough to a firearm sound to raise suspicion.....sometimes it sounds more like a hammer hitting a board or nail. You'll have to be the judge of that yourself.

As has been mentioned above....Air Arms does have some quieter guns already made that way.

Check the Airgun Classifieds at American Airguns Classifieds and other locations....you're liable to find a good used one that will fit your bill. I've got a nice quiet BSA Spitfire, but it isn't working at the moment, or I'd sell it to you.
