Pellet gun cleaning??
« on: April 03, 2003, 12:30:55 PM »
Recently ordered a .22 caliber pellet pistol, target & hollow point pellets, and some "cleaning pellets".

WHAT IS YOUR RECOMENDATION FOR CLEANING PELLET GUNS??

Are the pellets just shot through the gun dry or would it be better to put a drop of bore solvent on a pellet now and then??  I'm definately open to suggestions / ideas!!

Thanks, Del
(who wants to clean & lube my pellet gun to make it last a long time!)
I LOVE TO HUNT!
Especially with a Handgun!!

Well Del, I dont think applying solvent to the pellets will do much. The cleaning pellet travels so fast through the barrel the solvent won't have time to work. Also, be careful what kind of solvent you use if you do use it, most will destroy the seals in the gun if allowed to come into contact with them. If you must use solvent, use only a quality airgun rated solvent.
You really don't need to clean airgun bores unless you see a significant leading problem or accuracy is degrading. As the rifling in the barrel is very fine and only thousandths of an inch deep over cleaning can do more harm than good.
About those hollow point pellets- you may discover that they are not very accurate from a 1322, they are best used with a high power spring gun. The mushrooming effect really doesn't happen at the low energy levels generated by the 1322 either. If you are going to hunt small game with it, the best pellets are either Crosman Copperhead wadcutters or Crosman Premiers. The wadcutters flat face imparts a good deal of shock to such things as birds and squirrels, and the domed Premiers have excellent penetration even at longer ranges. Both are far more accurate in the 1322.
You will also find that the plastic breech on the 1322 leaves something to be desired. Most owners replace it with an after market aluminum breech that has scope rails. The grips and pump handle can also be replaced with some really nice custom wood pieces. http://crookedbarn.com

If you're getting any kind of fouling, switch to a better quality of pellet.  Other than that, just wiping the gun down with a silicone cloth is all that's necessary. Certain fanatics will use cleaning pellets with the "oiled sandwich" method of putting a cleaning pellet into the bore followed by an oiled cleaning pellet, followed by another dry cleaning pellet. Firing a few of those is done by these people.  The procedure is generally regarded as unnecessary.  If accuracy has fallen off and the cleaning pellet method doesn't work, you'll have to remove the barrel and clean it in the manner that is conventional for firearms. The barrel has to be removed so that solvent doesn't get on any of the seals or into the air chamber.

It is the norm for pellet guns to require no maintenance to the bore.
