336SS or 94 Trapper
« on: April 03, 2003, 08:15:38 PM »
I am new to lever action rifles, fired a few in the last few weeks a .22 and a marlin guide gun in 45/70. I really liked the marlin guide gun but would like to get a shorty 30/30 to practice with and get more comfortable using before buying an expensive big bore. I am looking at buying either the marlin 336SS or the Winchester 94 trapper model with 16" barrel. I like the compactness of these lever guns, and would like to know anybody's likes and dislikes with the two. Personally I like the look of the marlin but the Win. is $120.00 cheaper. Thanks

I like stainless for Alaska

With the weather we have here in Alaska -'specially hunting season, I love stainless.  I'd be concerned about the power of the short barreled gun. 30-30 is pretty light for Alaska even with the 20 barrel. Though I did shoot a moose with my 94, I only rarely carry it now for caribou or Kodiak deer.

Bought the 94 Trapper myself.  I personally think the Winchesters are better looking guns.  I cannot tell enough difference in the guns actions to justify the cost of the Marlin in my opinion.  However I bet this will be in contrast to other opinions because the Marlin is considered a better gun by most folks, I just cannot see it myself.
