20 ga Hornady SST Slugs.............
« on: July 05, 2006, 10:39:34 PM »
.........Has anyone shot these yet? I just picked up 6 boxes (30 slugs).........didn't know I would have to take out a 2nd  mortgage on the house to finance them.........but hopefully they will shoot good in my Ultra Slug Hunter LE. The slugs with 6 percent sales tax came to $82.36, or $12.95/box before tax. At $2.75 EACH after tax, you don't go out shooting these every day, that is for sure.

They are using the .45 caliber 250 grain SST bullet in the 20 ga, the 12 ga uses the .50 caliber 300 grain SST bullet.

The 20's Muzzle velocity is 1800 fps with trajectories as follows:

50 yds =   + 2.5"

100 yds =  +3.3"

150 yds =  0.0"

200 yds =  -8.2

Just hope these things shoot well out of my 1-28" twist barrel. These slugs should be comparable to a muzzleloader loaded at around 100 grains of powder, as long as the accuracy holds up. I have been shooting the Remington Ultra Core-Lokt 260 grain slugs and the Winchester Partition Gold 260 grain slugs over the last few years and have been happy with the results, but there is always room for improvement. Lets hope the new SST is what I have been looking for.

I will probably Zero these in at 125 yds, that should keep things closer under + 2.0" all the way out to 125 and hopefully within - 2.0" at 150 yds. I don't plan on shooting any farther than that anyway.

The 12 ga has a MV of 2000 fps, and has a flatter trajectory even with the heavier slug. Now the 12 ga I would consider to be a true 200 yard bullet as long as the accuracy holds out.

If anyone has shot these in 20 ga, please report your results and I will do the same. I will be waiting for a cool day with absolutely no wind before I shoot these things at $2.75 a pop though.

I picked up some of the 12 gauge ones, but need to get to the range with them, I am also going to try the 20 gauge ones when I can find them.

I'll be sure to let you know how I do with them when I get to them. I bought 10 boxes of 20ga Partitions recently. I really don't any reason to purchase anything else until I go through those...

From the range this weekend....

I found some 20 gauge SST slugs for my shotgun, I went to the range today and shot them, all I can saw is wow!! I got some great groups, all holes were touching at 100 yards. Awesome round. Expensive, not one you want to sit down and shoot 40 or 50 rounds.  ;D The 12 gauge did not shot as accurate in my Browning Gold hunter slugger, I think it is the gun not the slugs, because they shot better than all the other slugs I put through the Browning. Now I wish I did not sell my Remington 1100 slug gun.

Redhawk1,

What kind of 20 ga slug gun did you shoot those through? And what is the twist rate of your barrel? I have an Ultra Slug Hunter LE with a 1-28 twist.

I have been waiting for it to cool of a bit before I shoot mine. I talked to Steve Hornady last year about the 20 ga SST and mentioned that the 20ga slug gun is really gaining popularity with the new high-performance slugs and faster twist barrels. He said they would be developing one and it would be out by the 3rd quarter of 2006. He lived up to his word and I commend him for that.

Wonder how them new Ithaca's are doing? I think they have a 1-24 or 1-26 twist in their new 20's.

I have an H&R Ultra Slug 20 ga, with a 1-28 twist. It is topped with a Leupold VaraXII 3X9X50, the scope cost more than the gun, but what the heck, I had it in my gun safe and it needed a home.

I just picked up 4 boxes of the 20 gauge SST's yesterday at Bass Pro Shops. They were $9.99 a box, that was the lowest price of any sabot slug they had on the shelve. I can't wait to try them in my Mossberg 20 gauge Trophy Slugger. So far this shotgun has shot very good with ever sabot I have tried except for the Lightfield hybrids which were horrible in it. Currently I'm shooting the Remington Copper Solids into about 2" groups at 100 yards which I'm totally happy with...
I just want to see if the SST slug will do this or maybe a little better. When I get to the range I will let you guys know how they did for me.

I finally got out and shot the 20 ga SST's, not good out of my gun. It was in the low 70's with clouds blocking the sun this evening and no wind. The best group out of the three I shot was 3-1/4", the worst 4-5/8" at 100 yds.  :'( So it looks like they will be out for me. I usually get under 2" groups with Rem CoreLokt or Win Partition Golds, and have some sub MOA groups with both of those slugs.

The thing I noticed about the sabot on the SST's, is that they are very soft plastic, have a seperate gas check, have and internal plastic ring wit a rubber cusion under. I think they need to do a little more work on thes things before I buy any more. The Rem and Win sabots have a metal disc molded into the base and are harder plastic. Another thing that disturbed me is some of the sabots were only opening up one or two petals, while most were opening all four and I think this is what was causing the groups to open up.

I will give them another try when the weather gets colder, that will make the plastic firmer and the sabots may open better if they are colder. But for now, they won't be my choice for hunting. I really wanted them to be my hunting slug too. :(

I was hoping they would perform better for you as well.  I use the 250 SST in my Knight and it is a deer killer.  I have a NEF frame I was thinking about putting a 20 ga Tracker II barrel on for very bad weather.  I've never had the Knight not go off but I'm always worried when I'm sitting in the rain.
