405 winchester hand load info
« on: April 04, 2003, 04:11:25 AM »
I have an older winchester model 95 chambered in 405 that I got from a great uncle when he passed away.  Does anyone out there have any hand loading info on this caliber?  I have found I can get dies, brass and 300 gr. Hornady RN from Midway USA.

I want to take a bear in Michigan with this rifle.  I've got lots of time to develope a pet load but I'm looking for a starting point.  It will be sighted in for 50 yards.  With Michigan's preference point system I wo'nt be hunting this fall   but I should draw a tag in'04.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.
The harder I work on habitat improvement the luckier I get.

Luv2hunteup:  Cartridges of the world show for 300 gr sp these loadings IMR 4895 56.0 gr. vel.2230  energy 3321   IMR3031 57.0 gr. vel. 2250  energy 3380.  And b-4 any of these are tried you need to have the rifle checked to be sure its in good order, also I would back these off a few gr. to start as that is the only loads shown.  Be careful and have fun :D   JIM

Hi to a fellow new guy. Get the new May issue of "SHOOTING TIMES" magazine, Rick Jamison has a article on the .405. Also if you get get hold of Mike  Venturino's book "SHOOTING LEVER GUNS OF THE OLD WEST" there is a section on the 1895, and .405.

I think the 95 is an exellent rifle, I recently picked up a browning copy in 30-40. I put reciever sights on it and plan to hunt with it next year. I bet the .405 will be a real thumper.

Good Luck

Thanks for the info I'll give it a try.  I do have a box and a half of old factory Winchester loads so I have shot it.  It looks like it should be a great bear rifle.  I do prefer fresh loads when it comes to hunting.

I'm between Rudyard and Trout Lake.  It's a good area for bear and great deer hunting, if the winters are not too long.  I'm kind of getting concerned we've been getting one good snow storm a week lately.

I've asked the family if my uncle ever shot anything with this rifle and it appears that he just wanted a big bore.  So I'm guessing next year will be this rifles first kill.  It's in excellent condition, no rust or wear marks.  I may just have to take a deer with it this year.
