Navy arms 12 guage side by side
« on: July 08, 2006, 07:39:06 AM »
hello fellers,

got one on the way, suppose to be delivered on Tuesday the 11th by the BBT.
I don't know if the barrels (28 inch) are choked or not. I have been shooting black powder for almost 50 years, but it has been a long time since I have done any shotgunning.
I was just wondering if anyone has any starting loads that they would share.  I just want to have some fun shooting, but don't need any shoulder bruisers.

 thanks in advance

I had a Navy Arms .12ga with cylinder bores..used it a couple labor Day weekends for a few doves...I used the following:
80grns Pyrodex-RS (or Goex 2F)
Two Oxyoke Wonderwads
Winchester AA RED shotgunwad
1+1/4oz #6's
Over shot card
CCI #11 magnum caps
"Flintlocks.......The Real Deal"
(Claims that 1:48" twists won't shoot PRBs accurately are old wives tales!!)

navy arms also made the t&t, or turkey and trap..  loads will be quite abit different for these guns from cylinder bores..  you will need to check if you have a choke and  then ask..  you can email me at ffffgdave@yahoo.com  when you find out what you have if you like. dave

My load is nearly the same. 80 gr ffg Goex, over powder card, cushion wad, 1 1/4oz. #8 shot and over powder card. Mine is a older Navy/Pedersoli SxS and is choked M/F. Does fine on dove out to 35-40yds with the choked barrel.

:)  I also use some loads that are similar to the above.  MOstly 80 to 90 of 2f(using Swiss at the moment) with an over powder card and then a fiber wad for a cushion.  Also been known to put some nornets nest on top of the powder and then the half inch felt wad.  Also 1.25 oz of shot(mine likes just about every size that I put in it but favors 7.5 a little)  Topped of with over shot wad and you are ready to go......stay safe.King

Does anyone still make a Double with Cyl/Cyl choke anymore? All I see has Full/Full or Choke Tubes. I am looking for the open Cylyinder bore. Thanks-Jack.

a good load for cylinder bore is  powder,, nitro card,, fiber wad with gob of lube on botom of fiber wad(tc bore butter works fine in all weather conditions)many homeade lubes can be found..,,shot,,  over shot wad..   pack the powder and wads not the shot........  remove caps before loading single barrel after shooting..  re seat unshot barrel, as shot likes to move up barrel with succesive shots...  measure load with ramrod lenght protruding out of barrel with fingers and make sure that each loading conforms to that or pull the load....    to tighten patterns use larger shot, more shot, less powder, harder shot(plated shot) , , to open up patterns use more powder, less shot,  smaller shot, chilled (softer)  shot,, pack shot.. to stop loads from working loose use two overshot cards and turn them so the punch bent  edges face toward the muzzel....  good luck , dave.

God bless ya dave;;;;; the old quote/rule of thumb,, less powder, more lead, shoot's farther kill's dead. Would be about the same as your experiance of more shot less powder= tighter pattern,,and/or more powder and smaller or less shot=open pattern.
Them darn olde rules of thumb! ?? :o
A goodley wad of hornets/bees nest for a "tween" wad works,,and "green leaves" on top ta hold the lead from spillin',,huhm?  I guess our traditional for-fathers just didn't know nuthin bout shootin them smoothies ???

I have a Pedersoli double 12 and I use about the same loads as listed, 80 grs., 1 1/4 oz. shot and fibre wads  My only issue is that the shotgun is pretty light weight and a decent load has fairly stout recoil.  The loads patterned pretty darn good for Cyl./Cyl. out to 25-30 yards but the felt recoil was more than my 45-90 Sharps.  But it's a hunting shotgun so my thoughts are "so what".
