Stock for a Contender
« on: July 09, 2006, 03:53:08 PM »
Where can I send a slab of wood to be made into a butt & forestock for a contender rifle?
Thanks in advance!

I actually checked this out several years ago.  I finally came up with a gunsmith in Texas who would do it but the price was very high.  Then Fox Ridge Outfitters strated offering walnut thumbhole stocks for both the Contender and the Encore.  I consider them excellent at a reasonable price and abandoned my quest for a gunsmith to make me one.

Gunstocks Inc said they would build one of their stock designs with a customer provided blank when I asked them a while back.  I haven't got around to determining what the dimensions need to be for the blank for them to work with it.  I also believe Boyd's will do the inletting on a customer provided blank.  I have been looking into getting a blank from Richard's and having Gunstocks Inc and Georgia Jim do up a set for me.  If you get the dimensions info from any of these companies, please post it back here.

http://www.gunstocksinc.com/index.html  Makes several types of stocks for the tc, however I ended up with a Choate Machine Survival Stock and added a  22-04-01 | Standard Cheek Piece.  After that, I drilled through both the cheek piece and the stock and added a 1/4 by 20 anchor and attached with a sloted screw.  The I cut strips of pvc pipe, and to fit, this gives me an adjustable cheek piece.  I also painted the pvc strips black.  I can lift the cheek piece up another inch that way.

Just another way of looking at it.

Curt,
Have you tried Bullberry?  They are willing to take your wood and produce a nice stock.  Give Fred a call.  Hope this helps. :)

I second the recommendation for Gunstocks Inc.  Both my Encore frames sport their stocks.  I also like their "stinger" style stock versus the traditional thumbhole models.

Denzel Roberts out of Houston will also build you a nice stock.  I didn't care for his rifle stock designs, but I do have a pistol grip from him for my Contender.

I am a custom gunstock maker here in Georgia. My business is restoring antique firearms and custom hand built hunting rifles. If you are interested please drop me an email or feel free to call. If I knew where to put them, I would be glad to post pictures of my work.

If you are near Acworth, stop by the new C3 gun store on Hwy 41 in the Kroger shopping Center (right beside Ernie's Steak house). They have 2 of my rifles on display there. Feel free to pick them and look them over thoroughly .

Take care,
Chris
