Anyone shooting skeet these days?
« on: July 14, 2006, 12:15:12 PM »
Or for that matter Trap or Sporting clays?

Things sure have been dead on this forum since we opened it. I didn't think it would be supported when we set it up due to previous experience but I'd really like to see it succeed.

I've been shooting skeet again this year after a lay off of several years, I guess maybe at least 5-7 years laid off. I'm not back where I was yet but then I'm not shooting all that much. Most weeks I shoot two rounds on Wednesday mornings only. I'm pretty much settled back in to using the 28 ga for most of my skeet shooting as it's my favorite. I'm shooting the 20 ga some tho. The 12 was just beating me up so much with my bum shoulder I've put my Berretta up for sale.

If you're shooting any of the clay target games let's hear about it.

Have shot a couple rounds of sporting clays. Planning on getting in a round in the morning before it gets to hot. Would like to shoot more often but the sporting clays range is 45 miles one-way for me.

Graybeard, may have to follow your lead an downsize from my 12 guage. The recoil of a 100 shots are starting to get to my old shoulder. Never had a shoulder problem until I got in my upper 50's. I guess these things come with the age.

Come on guys let's post up what we have been shooting.

Yup, I'm shooting Skeet.  I shot the Fredericksburg R&GC Battlefield Open this past weekend.  I had a brain cramp on my 3rd shot of 12 ga, but then ran the next 97 for a 99 overall and a five way tie in B class.  Uncharacteristically, at the end of shoot off doubles I was the last one standing.  The B class win and my referee fees essentially paid for my match (except for the $60 in ammo, of course!)  I was also in the shootoff for Sub Senior (3rd) and for Retired Military categories (2nd).  My 99 also moved me up to A class, just in time for the State Championship next month.  Yippee!  The heat was beastly, and really showed on the 28/.410 day.

I shot my first round of trap May 30th (shot 48 more since then), and my first 2 rounds of sporting clays July 20. What a blast! I've been working and staying out of town, so after work I went shooting while the rest of the crew went drinking. :P  I am a died in the wool pistolero, and even shot a round of trap with my TC Contender with a 12" 45/.410  barrel.   (broke 8 of 20 from the "12" yard line!!) Next time I'm by a skeet range, I'll try that too!!

After I shot this past Wednesday I dropped by the gunshop to see if he had sold my Berretta White Onyx 12 ga I'd left with him. He had. I left with a Browning Classic Lightning 12 ga to replace it.

Today I took it out to see if I was really gonna be able to shoot it. I desperately need surgery on both shoulders and my right one just don't like recoil these days. I shot one round dropping four targets and my entire right arm was hurting as if it was gonna fall off and that was with one ounce loads. I put it away and got out my 28 ga and shot another round. Dropped a high two cuz I lost in and by the time I picked it up it was too late. It was a very cloundy day and I didn't change lens in my shooting glasses I just used the dark lens. Dropped the dang option too and I saw it. Then messed up on low eight and dropped it for a 22.  ::) Oh well I didn't claim I was good any longer.  :o

So when I left the range today I was back at the gunshop and the 12 stayed there and a Browning White Lightning .410 came home with me. Now I already KNOW from previous years of shooting me and the .410 are NOT a winning combination but dang it at least it won't make my right shoulder fall off like the 12 nearly does. So from now on I'll do most of my skeet shooting with my 28 ga, some with the little .410 and the 20 and hunt with the 20 and 28 I guess.

Danged old age, iffen I'd have known I was gonna last this long I might have taken better care of myself. Naw, I doubt it.  ???

Shooting a couple of times a month. More rounds, less often.....Don't always work thou.
Skeet is what I like with S/C's next. The Trap somes and goes for me...The angle of departure, speed and rotation, lead, shoot, bang dang :D
5-stand is okay, the clays courses are better I think.
I shot @ Capitol City Clays in Austin,Tx last week on the 50 bird course.....I looked very good to the other guys ;) ::)
I remembered real quick I was in the Texas Hill Country; Birds coming from down below in a gully or ravine ???
:-X On station 5 a true pair of crossers right to left...a pair of whitewings flew in formation with the orange domes.... ::) :o  OOps ;D
Gotta Love it ;)

I shoot Beretta's in a 391 12ga Hybrid...A 391 Urika field with a Sporting buttstock and
a 391 20ga Sporting.
I have a new 391 Gold Sporting coming in a 12ga this week I hope..Just waiting for the Dealer to call upon arrival.
I thought I wanted an O/U but a steady diet on my Uncle Arthur Shoulder won't get it.....I'll stick with Gas guns

Every Saturday morning I shoot skeet with my Beretta silver pigeon II 30" 12 gauge. I was shooting 1 1/8 loads however, I dropped down to 1 oz. loads and 7/8 loads. I still average 23 to 25 with no heavy recoil.

Some skeet, but mostly trap. There is an old-timer's league at my club and it is really fun to see some of these 80+ guys get out there and bang away. Some are still so good that I swear they could do it blindfolded. I use a Model 12 from 1926 and one guy borrowed it because that was the year he was born in.

New gun to him, never used a Model 12 before.

He ran them.

I hate a show off... :D

Shotgun shooting is getting too expensive for me. If I can't afford to shoot enough to break 24 or 25 at skeet than it's not worth it. Rifle shooting is more interesting anyhow.

My Beretta 12 ga. 390SC's gun using 1 or 7/8 oz shot really cuts down on the recoil. Can't see going to 20 or 28ga as heavier 12 ga with above loads probably about same recoil factor as a 20,  or higher cost of 28's not worth it.

Shot a few rounds of skeet last week. It's been a few years since I've broken out the scatterguns.  I'm not nearly as good as you guys, but enjoy trying anyway. I have been shooting the 20ga this year, that's a first for me. I still have my 12ga, so I may break that one out next time. I haven't reloaded for shotguns in 10yrs or so. I may have to break out the reloading equipment if I am going to shoot many clays! I would like to give sporting clays a try, boy, I bet that would be embrassing!

Started shooting Sporting Clays about three months ago. What a blast. Only been able to get out about every other week for a round. Score increases with each shoot. Tried to get into the league this year but couldn't get free enough to make it worth the extra effort. Probably next year for sure. Hope this forum continues.
Shoot safely.....shoot tomorrow.

Not to sound like an idiot but I shot skeet this year and really liked it. What's the difference between skeet, trap and sporting clays?

go to www.remington.com "brochure downloads". they have brochure downloads on skeet and trap. Sporting clays is trap and skeet rolled into one which was invented to humble every shooter.

I am think about a Beretta 391 Urika, for doves, and my dad will use it for squirrels.  For doves with low brass shell, will it eject them consistently?

I've got my pistol shooting and that keeps me about as busy as I can be with other committments. Skeet is my favorite because it's good practice for grouse hunting. I'd like to get into a skeet league, but just haven't been able to do it because of work hours and such. A buddy of mine is into trap and I plan to tag along with him to shoot trap once in a while as a social thing.

Last week my wife signed me up for a "skeet shoot and mens get together" at church. So I guess I'll have to try it in the next couple of weeks.

Mike, the 391 should do fine for your squirrels and doves!

Good Choice Mike ;)
Yes, the 391 should shoot them just fine. I have (3) 391's, (2) 12ga's and (1) 20ga.
I seem to shoot and swing the Sporting 20ga better each time out. :)

This is my first post!
Down here in Daytona Beach Florida it gets too hot during the summer to shoot.
Our county range has been closed due to development...
and our private range in the woods was sold off...
We should have a new range some time next year..
Things start to pick up when the late fall and winter rolls around...
Sporting clays, skeet and trap tournaments take place around the
state...
Anyone in this forum live in florida....? and if you do....where?
Ronnie

My son and I shoot every Wednesday night. He is a great kid and a heck of a shot. We reload all our own shells. It's a small club just south of Columbus Oh. Trap shooting is open to the public. We get a pretty good crowd. Just happened to stumble on to your web site while I was looking for some current loads. We use to shoot about 3 years ago but for some reason we stopped. Went back to the same old loads we use to use and after 3 weeks we are getting right back into the swing of things. Great way to spend time with you kids.

Who-hoo!!!!  I finally tried skeet! It's a blast! Only got to shoot one round as it was a church function with 32 men in attendance. I shot an 18. It seemed like I was missing a lot, but I had FUN! this outing was a success, as it introduced a lot of men to shooting that otherwise wouldn't have the opportunity. And I have to say, it was the first church shoot I have ever been to! Now I'm hooked, and will have to try it again!
