Anyone loading for the 28 ga these days? The price of shells has gone so high shooting factory sure is expensive. Back when I got out of shooting clays I sold my MEC 600 JR with my old 28 ga O/U to a friend who has since died. His stepson who now has the equipment wouldn't let go so I bought a new Browning O/U and a new MEC Versamec 700 Loader.

Back in the past I've used 12-12.5 grains of Green Dot for my loads in RP hulls with RP wads. I've got a few pounds of Green Dot left so I guess that's where I'll start again. I was also using some Winchester Super Field in WW AA hulls and have a supply of that left so might give it a try again also.

What are you guys using?

I still have quite a lot of the old style AA's I'm loading. I used to load 12.5 grs of Greendot. I've since switched to 13.0 grs. of Universal Clays, which like GD works well in the 20 and 28 and cuts down on powder prices when bought in bulk. It's cleaner shooting than GD, but I never figured out why this is so important I clean the gun right after I get home anyway no matter what I'm shooting?

It has always amazed me how many folks are so worried about how clean a shotshell powder burns, that's never really been a consideration for me in making my decision. I care about how well it performs on the target and not much else. Of course these days cost is a factor so anything that's cheaper is nice.

I've noticed some loads listed for Unique as well and I have a good supply of that. So I think I'm set for powders, wads and shot now. I saw 2000 primers in my stash as well so I've got enough of those for awhile. I picked up a flat of ten boxes of RP factory ammo the other day and the store owner is supposed to be bringing me what once fired hulls he has also. When I get those I'm thinking I'm all set to begin loading again for the 28.

Here is what I load:
Win 28 HS hull
Win 209 primer
17.2 grains of Hodgdon HS-6 powder
Rem PT-28 wad
3/4 oz of magnum shot (size is your choice)

Man, you guys have to take a look at Longshot. It's the best powder out there for the 28 ga. Great stackup of components, great crimps, good velocity. Crushes the claybirds. Check Hodgdon's website for loads.

I tried Longshot but found that I like Hodgdon's HS-6 (or Winchester 540) better.

it looks like any shotshel other then a 12 or 20 ga. is getting very expensive and in a lot of places hard to find.
a box of 3 inch 410 shells runs like $9.99 around me when I can find them but i can buy a box of 12 ga game loads for as little as $3.00 almost any place

You can really save money by loading 28 gauge and .410 bore shells.
I also load 12 and 20 gauge so I can shoot the type of loads I want.
You can still save a bit on the two big guns and a lot on the little guns
by reloading as you noted in your post on the cost of 3" .410 shells.

I do load for the 12 ga but mostly for special loads such as turkey loads, slugs and buck shot.
the rest of the loads are just to cheal to bother load

I have a mec 600 JR loader for the 410 that I load buck shot and normal shot shells for upland game hunting

Got an 1100 skeet T in 28 gauge. Reload for it using a MEC grabber press. Usually buy a 1/2 case (10 boxs) of reminton skeet loads - they were the lowest cost per box "good reloading shell" I could find. Shoot some skeet and then reload with 7 1/2 shot for some dove shooting. Am getting about 6 to 7 reloads per shell with the Rem case.

Gamaliel Shooting supply has Remington #9 skeet loads for $75.50 per 10 box case. They also have Estate #6 thru #9 for $62.00 per 10bx case. I've never reloaded the Estate shell so can't help with info there.

I've just picked up a .410 Browning O/U just like my 28 ga. I bought a half case (ten boxes) of Winchester AA skeet loads for it today. The dealer said he was letting me have them at his cost which was an even $78. I definitely gonna get me a loader for that one if I'm gonna shoot it. I'll pick up a MEC 600 JR for it I guess. I see MEC isn't making the Model 700 any longer, that's what I used to load them on.

I think the dealer was pulling your leg a bit about that being dealer cost.

They are $7.45 at WalMart here, haven't checked Academy lately as I have plenty to reload right now.

Out the door that would mean over $80 per flat of ten boxes. I got out the door for only $78. It's not at all uncommon for Wal-Mart to be able to sell such things below what a small dealer can buy for. I have no reason to doubt him when he says that he let me have them at his cost.

GB, How did that side by side 28 you bought work out? I have a Browning BPS and a older model 1100 in 28 and I love the both of them..bought the BPS for my son, who shoots off the left shoulder, but I find it hard to give up!! HA.

I've had good intentions several times but something just keeps coming up to keep me from it. I hope to shoot it next time at the range. The O/Us have been keeping me busy and I've just not gotten my "round tuit" yet.

I'm using 12.5 greendot, cb wads, and 7.5, or 8. I like the AA cases much better than the rem cases. I cannot get a decent crimp on the rem cases, and after ~2-3 times the ends get charred and brittle.
I have the same prob w/ 20 ga, but in reverse (rem good, AA bad).

I shot it. I traded it same day. Just too petite for my hands. I now have a BSA Royal 20 gauge, fits my hands much better but I've not yet shot it. I did love that little Huglu but it really was just too tiny.

Hows the 28 ga on squirrels ? lookin for for something different found at Gun shop New NEF 28 ga lamb. camo with gold medalon in stock He had for 4yrs. asking $149 said He let Me have it for $100 out the door and a box of 6 shot put $20 to hold until I asked..........John

Should do fine. Many think the .410 is an excellent squirrel gun and the 28 for sure is more gun than it. Of course how far off you will be able to kill them depends on the choke and the load you're using. Winchester makes a one ounce load that would be what I'd recommend for hunting squirrel with it rather than the 3/4 oz load. I'd also go with #7-1/2 shot size not #6. For sure if you're using only 3/4 oz go with the smaller shot for more dense pattern.

I have harvested plenty of squirrels with the 28. Win now has a 1 oz load for the 28 thats a real killer on squirrels. On another note has anyone reloaded the new win HS hulls yet? How are they on resizing?

I'm loading the AA HS in .410 and it's the smoothest loading .410 of them all, better than the old AAs for sure. Haven't tried the new AA HS 28s yet, I've never really been fond of loading the AA in 28 as it's shorter than everyone else's hull and you really need to set up just for it for it to load properly. Since I mostly use RP 28s I just seldom bother with them.

not to tell you what to do, but I also thought about conversions, but for just a little more $ I bought 3 different 600's 12,20,28. No hassle, just unbolt one and bolt up another.

Sorry it took so long but tried and tried (have other Handies) would not go off on first shot took it back they are havin fixed only once an while would it fire (found I have a filnch from hard kickin 12 ga) shot 30 rounds in it tried reloadin for frist time and the Mec Jr. was great for frist time reloader and Yes for the money will buy the others as whole reloaders .........John
