Mod 657-2 problem
« on: July 15, 2006, 05:35:30 AM »
I just resently picked up what i thought was i nice SS 41 mag . but after just 6 rounds i found a major problem . All 6 of the rounds have very bad buldges to the case and 2 are split about 3/4 of the way down the case , which tells me that the cyl. has been streached from very HOT loads .

I was shooting Remington factory 240 gr. soft points . so i don't think it was my ammo that caused the problem .

Now my question , if i pick up a new cyl., what are the chances that it will line up with the barrel or will i have to have a smith time it , or would i be furture ahead to just send it to S&W for repair .

What do you think ?

Thanks for the input , but do not need to ship it back . it is a .41 GNR re-chamber , now to find load data and dies .  8)

Did Reeder not obliterate the .41 S&W Mag caliber designation and add his? If not he has no business being in business.

Bill

On the barrel it says 41 Mag in stamped letters and just in front of it says 41 GNR in script letters , and not knowing of Reeder i never made the connection till i took it to a local smith .  :-[

He miked the cyl. and looked at the fired cases that i shot that were factory 41 rem. mag and then he looked at the bottle neck of the fireformed cases , at this point a lightbulb came on in his head , and when then he saw the script on the barrel he knew what i had .

I had a 5.5" Ruger Bisley .41 Magnum made up a few years ago by GR and had the extra .41 GNR cylinder made. Have not had a chance to load for it yet but I can tell you that they don't give those die sets away...be ready for some sticker shock.

You might check with Brownells or GUN PARTS Corp. to see if they have any extra M657 cylinders in stock. That way you could at least have some factory ammo if you were on a hunt and misplaced your GNR ammo...
