.22 WMR Sportster vs. Ultra Hunter
« on: July 15, 2006, 12:26:07 PM »
I am considering a purchase of one of these two rifles.  I've read a few threads here at GBO on both and am leaning towards the Sportster.  Let me know what you think!

1) Price Sportster $119.99, UH $150

2) Weight: Sportster is about 1.5-2.5 lbs LIGHTER, however I'd be looking at getting rid of the lam stocks and going with Synthetic preferably the SURVIVOR stock and forend.  Would this change the weight of the dry rifle?

3) Accuracy: From what I've read, I shouldn't have a problem with the Sportster for my uses as I want a 'walking' rifle that I will be using at the range for 'long' range plinking.  I would like 1 MOA and it sounds I should be able to achieve this with proper ammo evaluations.  Would you agree or disagree?

4) Barrel heating: The barrel shouldn't get too hot as it's a single shot...Have you ever experienced heat problems with a single shot .22WMR for accuracy?

5) Barrel length: Shouldn't be too much of an issue for my shooting...

6) Any pros or cons I've missed?

Thanks for any/all input!

If you are looking for a good walk around rifle go with the Sportster , i took my daughters to Ok. for a PD shoot awhile back and was more than pleased with shots at over 250 yards .

The Survivor will add a tad bit of weight over the factory syn. stock but will be less than the laminates . Her's will shoot a ragid cloverleaf at 100 .

you can't go wrong with either .

Open sights?

Am I correct in noticing that the Sportster .22WMR has open sights?  If so, that's another plus in my books!  Thanks!

My Sportster .22 mag came with Weaver mounts on it. I ordered the LR and Hummer barrels later and they came the same way.
I got the bull barrel in the .17 Hummer...and if I had it to do all over, I would have the bull barrel in all three.
Knowing that the .17HMR is inherently more accurate than the other two...I stilll find that for me, the difference is to great to be just the difference in calibers.

IMHO..the bull barrel variety just seems to "hang" better for those steady shots..

I know that many lighter barrelled H&Rs do shoot well...but I believe the bull barrel offers a little edge on the others..and still not a lot for me to carry.. ( I'll be 70 yrs old in 1&1/2 months)

QUICKDTOO has a large collection of NEF/H&R and I have found his advice very valuable when tuning my NEFs..perhaps he can offer some reasons why my heavy barrel shoots better..
If you don't want the truth, don't ask me.  If you want something sugar coated...go eat a donut !  (anon)

I ended up with the Sportster but now have a problem with the transfer bar...See other thread...

So now that it seems it has to go back to the factory, I'm considering a SECOND barrel already while it's there.  Any recommendations?  ;D
