Do your research on the electro etching thing before you buy. See if you can find someone who is actually using one and talk to them.

You might also Check Ebay for one of these machines. While looking on Ebay also look for a Hermes trophy engraver or a roll stamping machine.  The Impressed and engraved stamps will look more "cannoney", The etched stamps very professional.

I've seen roll stamps before. I think they would be kind of expensive to get made. Same with the engraver I think. Also curved surfaces might be trouble. I have an engraver but it's just for flat stuff. With the elictrical engraver, I can get artsy fartsy Me thinks ;D I'll be posting pictures for sure.

Powder Keg.
I was just looking at those ebay signal cannons mentioned in another post.In particular that one that Douglas mentions with the groove on the breech face from the non retracting firng pin.I noticed that it had a simple case extraction system and that lead me to wonder how you plan to extract the fired cases from your cannon

I'm building one of these for me but I think it will get a simple naval carriage for now. I've got a big project to do next, so it will have to wait untill then.

I planned on using a rammer to extract the shells.

A friend of mine and my wife went to shoot last night. I had three shells loaded and ready to go. This was so much easier than muzzleloading the cannon. We had a great time! In the future I plan on building several different models. I have a box of four gauge shells just sitting here:O)

I just saw the video..., thats a fair recoil for a shell. No projo and on a sled as opposed to wheels. Good show !!!

I Had the trunnions Tig welded on. They turned out pretty good. There were a couple little pinholes on the bottom that I'll fillwith epoxy and put a dab of black paint on. The weledr didnt want to mess it up by trying to fix it.

I got my Etch-O-Matic today. I made a couple templates over the last couple of days. Here are the results of one of them.

It works really good! This shaft was just turned. There was no polish or anything. I want to mess with it a bit before I mark a barrel. The little powder Keg was Jeeper1's Idea ;D I'll start a new thread and explain how the system works.

Well I finished all the machine work on this baby. I have the handle mounted on the door. I decided to go with an acorne shaped handle to make it a little fancier. I like the look. The customer requested a Steel knob like the barrel on this Gun. I have one that's bronze. I'll post pictures of it tomarow. Now all I have to do is clean up all the tool marks and etch my signature and a bit of information on the barrel, Then Blue it. I'll have it done this weekend.

So what did you decide to use for a mount?  Surely not that test mount you have there.

So what did you decide to use for a mount?  Surely not that test mount you have there.

I haven't decided yet on a carriage for mine. I do like the Marsilly style carriage. It might get one like that? I have a couple projects to do before I can build my carriage, so I have some time to think about it. I don't like those swivlemounts much because the barrel just hangs there. They look out of place unless you have a 50 footer to mount it on ;D

Some time ago I eyed a pic with a signal cannon that had a handle like that. I thoutht at the time that it was very unique and that I'd have to use it sometime.

Well better get out to the play pen, Wes

Looks really good Wes. Don't forget to tell us about how the Etch O Matic works. I have been getting mine done with a friends CNC mill but yours would be easier than doing that.

I'm working on the design for the door. I used a program to make covers for CD's to get the text typed on a radius. What do you think? This will go on the door. After I get it finalized, I'll make up the templates and start etching. From the little bit I've messed with it, I am really pleased. It is very easy to get profesional looking results.

Hey Guys check this out!!!

I messed around with the sizes I needed to get everything to fit the door right.

I then made a stencil with my new toy. It only takes a few minutes to do, once you have the positive printed out. These are nice because they are kinda transparent and you can position them pretty easily.

Here are a couple of pictures with the door blued and ready to go onto the barrel. It was hard to get a good picture of this. They turned out very profesional looking. Not bad for working in my kitchen ;D

Thanks Ed!!! It took a bit more work than I thought today. I wanted to get the etching right so after I made the stencil I did several practice burns to make sure everything would be perfect.  I have the barrel ready to blue, after I etch my logo into it ;D Then I have to heat treat the firing pin. After that she's ready to go.

Hi Wes,

Is that going to work on brass cannons, too?  It really looks great and adds a lot, that's for sure!

Keep smiling,
