My first Black Bear
« on: July 18, 2006, 12:02:51 AM »
Hey Folks,
I finally got my first one after moving to Alaska two and a half years ago.

Got the bear over bait with my wife sitting next to me.

I believe we are now addicted to bear hunting.

Yes, welcome and that's a good bear!

Hey Redhawk.......when should I plan on meeting you in WV to scout your new bear hunting spot?

Hey Redhawk.......when should I plan on meeting you in WV to scout your new bear hunting spot?

Let me know, I am going to be going up there the 28th of this month and again in August and September to do some scouting. One of the land owners next to my land said he had a guy getting fire wood next to my land and he saw a big black bear coming to my land. The only thing I have see on the land was deer and a few fawns.  ;D

Gregory,
I shot him at about 35 yards with my new  Remington XCR in .338 RUM using my handload consisting of a Nosler 225 AccuBond and

101 grains of Hodgdon Retumbo powder.

I aimed at the crease between the shoulder and rib cage.

At the shot the bear did a complete somersault and rolled over to get his feet back under him.

He took about 3 or 4 strides, went down, and moaned once and it was over.
     All in about 5-10 seconds.

       Thanks for the reply.

       Mark
