Mortar live fire
« on: July 18, 2006, 01:59:04 PM »
These pictures come from a live fire demonstration a few years ago at Blakeley Alabama, sight of one of the very last battles of the Civil War that took place in  April of 1865.

These guys are firing an actual projectile of some sort.  It didn't get much distance by the way.  Must have been a mild charge. Some of the pictures show one of the re-enactors showing off an actual or like actual projectile and the tongs to lift it.

Selecting the fuse.

Placing the fuse.

Loading.

Fire.

Smoke.

Look lady.  Two fingers is all I need.

Who says these aiming stakes are too close together?

Ready for another shot.

Very nice , enjoyed the photos.Looks like it would be authentic except for the fact that the shooters are well fed. ;D

Here is a better picture of the tongs which are probably historic relics.

And the guy showing them off.

Thanks for the welcome Double D.  Glad to post them.  Being an old FO ...Vietnam 9th Division and 101st....105's.  Howitzers were about half mortar, at least when firing high angle.

Besides my milsurps I  like bp guns and have more than a few.  I also like re-enactments of the Civil War kind.  I even took a couple of pictures for Civil War Times...really a hoot doing it. I would have paid them.

Absolutely beautiful photos, Niner.  Very, very nice!  We were most interested in the close-ups of the shell tongs.  We also noticed the mortar bed.  It's extremely similar to one we saw while visiting Foyd, VA this past July.  Welcome to the forum; we hope you will have future postings for all to enjoy.

Regards,

Tracy and Mike
