.410 choke for skeet
« on: July 18, 2006, 02:28:21 PM »
I am a casual skeet shooter and have use a .410 sometimes.  My question is, what is the best choke?  Skeet 1 or imp. cyl.  The shotgun I have has a full choke.  Not real easy to hit but when you do it smokes them.

A modified choke works best with a .410 for skeet and sporting. Because of pellet count your useable pattern is only 17-18 inches in dia. A more open choke will give a wider pattern but at the cost of density. I had a Browning 3 bbl. skeet set and it was choked mod/mod or .400 dia in both barrels from the factory. I had choke tubes put in a Brng Model 42 reproduction, I ended up puting the mod. tube in and never change it. Remember .410 chokes are, .410= cyl, .405= IC, .400= Mod., .395=full an accross the board spread of only .015". You do find an odd ball now and then though. I bought a Charles Daly .410 O/U (Italy) that was marked F/F, but actually measured .375 / .376 .020 over full. I broke out the choke reamers and made it .400 / .400 before I ever shot it, shoots great now.

Skeet is adequate, more makes for nice smoke IF you perfectly center the target but will cause a lot of misses from imperfect hold. I shot on Saturday morning with a fellow using the .410, he ran a straight the first round and missed at least 6-8 the next. Such is the way of the .410. I asked him the chokes in his tubes, he was using a Remington 3200 with Briley tube set. He said his chokes are skeet and skeet. He was smoking them that first round with it.

I've just bought me a new Browning White Lightning .410 and will be using skeet and skeet in it. For sure I'd not go tighter than IC.
