Grips for my Redhawk
« on: July 19, 2006, 06:25:00 AM »
I put Hogue grips on my Redhawk and am a little disappointed. The grips are not wide enough to fill the plam of my hand. The finger grooves are nice for my fingers and the rear fits nicely in the web of my hand but the sides of the grip almost don't touch my palm (or just below where my fingers meet my hand). Any suggestions for some wider grips?

Thanks.

Ya might try contacting Herrett. I don't know if they make them for the Redhawk, but their Bill Jordan grips are well known for being on the large size. Maybe they can whip something up for you.

I put these Hogue grips on my Dan Wessons and they fit my hand perfect.  These grips are bigger than the Hogue production rubber grips.

Thanks for the input from you both. The grips I put on my gun were of the rubber variety. I see you mention, and show wood grips. What are your thoughts on wood? Obviously you guys like them. I have very limited experience with them. The only experience I have is with the origional wood grips that came on the Redhawk. That was so long ago I don't remember if I liked them. Probably not based on the fact the I switched them out. Or, maybe I switched them out to get recoil reduction from the rubber. I like the looks of wood better and, if need be, I have PAST recoil gloves. Anyway, what are people's thoughts?

Thanks.

I am going with Micarta only...

I have it on my knives and not matter what is on the hands or handle the grip never slips.  The same is true on gun grips.  The other benefit is that the green canvas micarta grips I had made are smooth and unfinished making them very easy on the hands especially with the larger caliber hand guns.

I actually purchased the micarta from the knife maker and had it sent to Hogue, they where great to deal with and made these grips using their standard processes.

I will never go back to rubber or to wood.  So I guess "once you go micarta you never go back."

All Ruger handguns have grips that are to small to be comfortable for me. I use Pachmeyer (sp) decelerator grips, they are rubber and cover the back strap which helps on warm loads.

The wood Hogue grips for some reason are definitely wider and have greater circumference than their rubber grips.  For some guns they also make nylon grips but I am not familiar with them.  Herretts will definitely make grips for the Redhawk as I have had them in the past but my hand is smaller.  They will also make them to fit your hand (you send a tracing and they recommend a style).  In the past Hogue would make wood grips to fit your hand but I have no experience with this option.  You might also look at Eagle Grips.

The first Herrett;s stock I had made was this one.
I have large hands and it's still maybe too large for me.

Herrett's (208) 733-1498, Robin usually answers the phone and Dee is the stock maker. They're wonderful to deal with.

I don't have any experience with wood grips. You don't find that the gun slips in your hand during recoil? What about during hot weather when sweat might be an issue. I live in South Florida where it is over 90 degrees 2/3 of the year. What about wearing gloves with wood grips? Does that help? Just trying to get all the facts before having custom grips made.

Thanks everyone!!

Herrett's creates the stock to fit YOUR hand so it shouldn't be slipping around. I don't any trouble hanging onto the guns that I've dressed in Herrett's.

These Pachmyars fit my medium hands real well and tame recoil of the heaviest loads.

I also have Pachmayrs grips on my old 7 1/2" Redhawk. It controls the recoil even with the heaviest of 44 loads.
