Looking for opinions about a Ruger #1 for Sharps trade?
« on: July 20, 2006, 03:19:21 AM »
This question is mostly just to test the waters. I've got a Ruger #1 in .308 win. Had it about 3 years, put maybe 100 to 125 rounds through it. I  bought it as a deer rifle while living in TN, but moved to southeast MI, where you can't hunt with a rifle.

I've wanted a Sharps in .45/70 for quite some time to shoot silouettes. My budget situation is such that it will be several years before I could afford to buy a Sharps outright. My question then is this: if any of you were in this position, and you could find someone with a Sharps who was willing to trade, would it be worth it to you to trade your Ruger for a Sharps? My thoughts are that I could still hunt deer with the Sharps when presented with a chance, and buying another Ruger would be cheaper at some point. On the other hand, I love my Ruger, and finding a Sharps worth having for an even trade on a #1 would be difficult.

Anyway, just looking for thoughts or ideas. Any advice? Should I look for something like that, or just keep the Ruger and keep dreaming!?

Good luck finding someone to trade you unless they have a worn out Pedersoli sharps. My Shiloh Sharps cost me over $2500 and I have not seen one Ruger #1 I would consider trading for it, as a matter of fact there is not many guns I would trade for it. The cheapest Sharps I have seen was a used Pedersoli for about $750.00. Good luck in your search.

That was what I figured. I guess what I was wondering was whether anybody thought such a trade would be worthwhile, assuming I could find one.

You never know, stranger stuff has happened. Post it in the classifieds as a trade, see what happens. Good luck.

If I still had a Ruger #1, I'd trade it in a second for any good quality Sharps 1874 replica. I wouldn't trade it for one of the elcheapo off brand Sharps replicas, even though they sell for more than the #1 also.
Like Redhawk1 said, you probably wont have to worry on this one, since nobody would trade a Pedersoli or any of the high end Sharps replicas.
I just sold my Ruger#1-Lyman Centennial cased set, and I would have traded it for a Shiloh Sharps in a second if I thought anyone would be silly enough to do it. The Ruger#1-Lyman sold for $1500. That would have been a great trade for me too!

Unfortunately the Ruger #1 doesn't go nearly that high here, so unless he goes to OZ he wont find that deal. Around my neck of the woods a nice #1 goes for between $425-$575 for a used gun. Certain models might bring more, (as my Centennial did) or others.
