RL19 orRL22 for 7mm wsm
« on: July 21, 2006, 05:28:08 AM »
Just bought a myself a Savage 11g LH in 7mm wsm.Since I already relaod for the 270wsm and use RL19 and RL22 powders, I dont know which one to start out with to work up a good hunting load. Any help would be great....Would the faster 19 be better with lighter or heavier bullets? I want to use a 140gr fail safe... ???

Do your manuals list these as useable powders?  If so load up 5 of each and see what happens. You may want to try some less expensive bullets(same weight, same design) while working up a load. Once you get the powdercharge figured pretty, close then try the Failsafes. This way doesn't always work the way you'd think it should. I've changed from a certain load of powder with Hornady bullets to Remington or Sierra bullets and found that that particular bullet/powder combo just won't group.

Suds,

I am in the same process for a Winchester Featherweight 7mm WSM that I have.  I followed the loads in the Sierra manual for 140 and 160 grain BTSP and HPBT using IMR 4350 and H4350 EXT with really good success.  Now I'm experimenting with Hornady 139 gr. BTSP.  I called Hornady with the very same question, as the recent Hornady load manual doesn't specify which is better - these, R19, or R22.

Hornady suggested that I go with a load that provided a good load density (how full the case was left) and a moderate burn rate.  That ended up being R19.  I have the test loads made, but haven't shot the them yet.  Hope this helps.

Thanks Matt,
Thats what I'll start out with then.It seems I get a little bit  better groups with the RL19 in the other gun also. [.270wsm] I'll load some up this afternoon and try to go shoot them next weekend. I'll kept you posted...and thanks again.....Suds
