I just picked up a new Marlin 1895GS Guide Gun in 45-70
« on: July 22, 2006, 02:57:39 AM »
Well I just picked up a new Marlin 1895GS Guide Gun in 45-70. I Have had several Marlin rifles and loved them. I have had 2 of the 444SS models and one of the 444 standard length Marlins. I also had several 30-30's and a Model 1894 44 Mag. I sold them all for various reasons, last year I sold my old model 1895 in 45-70 to a buddy and he took a black bear with it on our last hunt to Maine.  I felt out of place without a lever action in my gun safe so I pick up the new 1895 GS stainless steel 45-70. I think I will go to the range today and sling some lead down range today...  ;D

What a blast at the range. I shot 40 rounds through the Marlin. I was shooting clay peons at 25 yards and blowing them up, I placed my target at 50 yards and shot a couple of groups and made adjustment to my sights. I then started shooting for groups with open sights. At 50 yards I was getting 2 to 2 1/2 inch groups. I was shooting some rounds I had loaded for my Ruger #1 in 45-70. I was using the Barnes SSST 400 gr. bullets one at a time and some 400 gr. 458 Win Mag bullets that are pointed Barnes X. They were all loaded to the Marlin levels. I have not tried any 45-70 bullets yet. I have to load some up. But over all I am pleased with the Marlin. I don't think I have ever had a bad lever action Marlin...

Well I decited to put a silver Leupold 3X9X40 VX1 ithat I had in the gun safe, that would look read good on this gun.  ;D

Great choice in a lever, Redhawk1....

You may also want to consider a good set of Iron sights on your new 1895GS.

I chose the XS ghost ring set for mine......works well within the ranges this rifle was intended for.

Definitely a fun gun and will do way more than most people give it credit for. I have three 95s and love each one. One is the cowboy and two guide guns, One is the stainless and the other is blue. The blue one has a muzzle brake on it which i am not crazy about but so be it. The stainless is rigged up just like "Hogships" The only problem is the levers are too small for my hands and i messed around and did not take advantage of the ones that were available on line. I have seen them listed in some of the gun parts catalogs but they are higher than a cats back. I guess i will keep putting my finger tips in the lever and call it good. Enjoy your 45-70 i know i do...........Joe.............

This is my 3 rd lever action 45-70. I have also had several other 45-70 rifles as well as my Shiloh Sharps in 45-70. I have always loved the 45-70. I would be out shooting today, but 100 degrees is just plain miserable.

My buddy wants to get out shooting Sunday, we have to get out there, we are going to Maine in the first part of September on a black bear hunt. He has not been shooting much this year, and I want to try out a few rounds in my 45-70 with the scope and get it sighted in. Hot or not we have to do it.  :o

Be sure to take plenty of pictures of that bear hunt. We'll want to see them.

if you want you can email me the pics and I can post them on here, also Redhawk is to blame on me wanting a 45-70 lever, after shooting my dad's 45-70 encore i realized it's a great cartridge, and i've always loved lever actions but i didnt want a 30-30 or a 307. I was considering the 450 but as others have said you can get the power of the 450 when reloading the 45-70 which of course i'd do. but then again i wouldnt load them to ruger #1 loads or anything anyways, but i have a question, i have only seen the 18 inch barreled version, but in handbooks etc i see them using marlin 1895s in 22 and 24 inch if i'm not mistaken whats the deal?
I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?"
Well, to tell the truth I shoot a Springfield XD so it doesnt really matter.

The non guide guns have longer barrels and that's the guns usually used in load development or guns used when doing the tests. I will e-mail you some pic's of our bear hunt. I would greatly appreciate you posting them for me.

i dont know everyone has to point the finger but i cant point it at myself i'm too stubborn ;D so since my dad has redhawkitis with the 45-70 i guess you're to blame for me shooting his encore so therefore if you trace the steps its your fault :D :D oh well i'm not complaining
