Hammer Extension Suggestions???
« on: July 22, 2006, 02:41:30 PM »
I just got a Leupold 2x7 33mm scope mounted with TC Maxima all steel Quick Detach rings and all steel base on a Bull Berry .308 barrel.

Just wondering what type of HAMMER EXTENSION to use.  I've heard of these making the spring so weak it can't ignite the primer?  Is there any truth to this myth?

I can use the hammer just fine now but when it's cold in the Winter, my gloves won't allow me to grasp it. It gets REAL cold where I hunt so the fngerless gloves are not an option.

Any help or suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,

Sandy

TC says not to use any.  Seems to me that one of the new Encores had a hammer that didn't need an add on extension.  Perhaps you gould use one of them.

I bought the one at cabela's from t/c. I think it was 8.99? No missfires, works for either hand. It sure makes cocking the rifle easier when it's -20 and your wearing gloves!!! put a dab of the blue locktite on the allen bolt just to be sure.

This is what I have on 2 of my Encores. Rightnour Hammer Extension for Encore, you can order them from Cabalas. Has worked for me for several years and no misfires.

I just now got off the phone with one of the Thompson Center technicians and he told me that sometime after the 1st of September they expect to have the new "SWING-HAMMER" available!  This would eliminate the need for a hammer extension!  The spur of the hammer can be rotated to the left or the right!

He stated that you would have to send your frame to T/C for the change over and the expected turn-around would be around a week, depending on their workload!

I heard the same thing. It is the new hammer that is on the Pro-hunter.

Looks like I'll be sending my Encore to TC.  This is killing my wallet!

I promised the Old Lady that this was the end.  Three barrels, a scope, a custom Kevlar stock with three seperate forends, mounts, bases , sling studs, and now a factory swing hammer!

I may be getting served with divorce papers before this is over.

Don't feel bad. I'm up to 3 frames - 9 long barrels - 5 pistol barrels, and i just opened the Contender can of worms with a frame and 2 barrels. These things are worse than crack.

Where can you get a kevlar stock? What is the difference from the plastic?

Yeah, I thought this encore thing would save me money.  Just the opposite.  The only way is saves is that you can't rattle off 5 shots as quickly.

I really hate to ask, but why did you get into Contender if your already set up w/ Encore.  Any real difference?

Looks like my encore will be going back to TC for a new hammer!!  I tried an extension from Cabela's, worked great on the ML, but every 2nd or 3rd shot from the 7mm-08 would misfire.  I cut the extension down to make it lighter, still misfired, took it off, and no more problems.  I had looked at the hammer on the Pro Hunter and wondered if it would work on the Encore.  I wonder how much that's gonna cost?

I would guess the industry standard of 4x its value.  Not that it would deter anyone.

I actually aske two reps from TC over the weekend at the Buckmasters expo in Greensboro.  They both said probably somewhere in the $60-75 range.

I have posted elsewhere that I did experience ignition problems on a .308 pistol Encore when using the hammer extension.  Is the swing hammer available as a replacement part?

Looks like it will be, sometime around the first part of September.  You'll have to send your encore back to TC, they'll replace the springs and the hammer for about $75.
