A  1 1/2 coilspring is great trap or number 11 double long or number 1 northwoods  double coilspring.  They all work good in right situations.  The Griz traps is tops in my book BUT you dont want  to have too many stolen.  THey work in good situations like pheasant shooting preserves and other places where pets are and you are specifically targeting coons.   Box traps are another option in high pet areas .  One can use larger footholds BUT SHOULD BE PUT ON DROWNERS ONLY with these big traps.

The traps Lee mentioned, are what I use, with 2 exceptions.I used to use the Northwoods #1 coil--but its small jawspread --under 4 inches, limits it's use.Any # 1 double coil, will work well if in good condition--plus offers a larger kill area.
I also use the coon cuff, for areas, where dogs may be a problem.

A #1 1/2 coil, is all the trap needed for fox.

I agree with Tom on this one...regarding the #1 coils for coon...I just haven't had alot of luck with #1 coils on coon. Now a #11 dbls is a great trap but the #1 coils I have used just seemed under powered lots of pullouts. Give me a #1 1/2 coil or #11 any day....with lots of swivels on the chain.

#11 is a tenacious little trap with tremendous holding power by sheer design. stick a screwdriver in the closed jaws and try to twist one open. the design of the longspring allows for very high spring lockups, but coupled with the short distance between the spring eyes on a #11 (with its little, short jawspread) only enhances the holding power. Get some with stout springs and you have a trap that will hold anything that gets in it. I've held a number of coyotes, cats, fox, etc in them, even toe caught beaver. Use lots of swivels. I use #11 both regular and double jaw models.
I also like 1-1/2 coils in water sets or where I may have a potential coon or fox catch. #2s are way too big for coon, unless you use older style #2 longs, which have the same jawspread as a 1-1/2 coil. #2 coils have a wider jawspread than most #2 longs do.
I also like the griz, and the coon cuffs, and I run some live traps where necessary.

Jim mentioned the #2 dbls trap for coon....I LOVE THAT TRAP!!! I didn't know it at the time but that #2 dbls was one of the first traps I used when I started trapping. I held lots of animals in that trap...stock. I did have a few problems but thats before I knew about swivels and trap adjustment. I still use a bunch of these traps on my waterline every year...as Jim said  they hold very well.
Bridger used to make a #2 dbls that was very well built, adjustable pan, strong springs good jaws...I thought it was better built than the #2 Northwoods dbls...now Sleepy Creek makes one.
