16FLSS
« on: July 23, 2006, 01:56:56 PM »
I am a LEFTY and am trying to decide on my first left-hand rifle.
Is this a good choice. I was thinking in .308 for deer up to 250 yds.
Is the stock any good or just plastic junk.
I know it will be accurate but will it be durable?
All help is appreciated.

I rebarreled a 270 win. SS 116 to 35 Whelan I had to relive the barrel channel to get that magnum contour A & B  barrel in there...It can shoot cloverleafs with 250 grain bullets...If it fits you [to use for hunting] I can't see why you would change that stock...mike in ct

I have the 16FLSS in .223 Rem.  It's a good rifle.  Haven't run much factory ammo through it, but it will shoot several handloads inside an inch at 100 yards from a rest.  It's an injection molded plastic stock.  No doubt the rifle would benefit from a stiffer stock with a better bedding platform, but it's still a shooter.  Hard to find lefty stocks for a Savage short action, and the factory stock is pillar-bedded.  I'd like to get a thumbhole, laminate stock for my model 16, but can't really spend the money at the moment.  And any replacement stock, I'd want pillar-bedded too.

Some additional points I forgot to add in my previous post:

.308 is a great caliber to choose for deer.  It's not an issue with my .223, but with a .308 I'd prefer a little better recoil pad than Savage provides on their 16FLSS.  And it comes with a 22" barrel.  I'd prefer a 24" barrel, but it's not that big an issue to me that it would be a deal breaker.
