Savage 99 Safety

 I have a Savage 99 in 308 Win. Last time I used it the gun discharged upon releasing the safety. Is this something I will be able to fix myself. I do most of my own repairs since the nearest smith is 250 air miles away in Juneau. Thanks. Bobcat

Sorry but I seldom suggest that someone fix a problem such as this themselves. If you were likely capable you wouldn't likely be asking. Jsut a suggestion though. You CAN mail the rifle to a smith for repair. The USPS will accept firearms(unloaded-NO AMMO) and you can simply ship them to a smith(speak with the smith first of course) and receive it back with NO FFL needed. OF course insurance is mandatory! Pack it well, perhaps even in one of the cheap single gun plastic molded gun cases. Include a note inside detailing the problem and as I said before call the smith first. That said the 99's safety is a bit 'involved' and can caause problems..

Working on a safety is a big tension producerr for a gunsmith. A small mistake can create huge problems, and the M99's safety is NOT one to start with..
