Ruger Vaquero Hitting Left....
« on: July 24, 2006, 11:38:00 AM »
So the way I see it I have two options.

I either insure it and send it miles from home to a professional.

OR

I regulate the sights myself.

The last thing I want is a "hack job", but is there a way to do this at home?

I understand the concept of regulating sights but I don't want to damage the gun.

Here's my 2 cents. Find somebody who has a collimater they know is correct. Use it to see if indeed the sights are off. If they are, tighten the barrel a tad. If not, learn to grip it with the bore lined up with the bones in your forearm and not push it left when firing. I see this so often it's not funny, and it almost always comes from the way folks want to hold onto single action grips. But sometimes they do need to be regulated, and most of the time just a tiny bit of tightening will solve the problem. Whatever you do, don't try to bend the front sight! It will break off and then you will really have a mess.

Setiing sights on a handgun for some one else is a thankless job. The collimator is likely NOBADE's defense for that problem. I'd say his prescription is very good.. But I'll reinterate, DON'T BEND THE FRONT SIGHT!!!!!!!!. Please remember it takes mighty little to move the bullet a bunch.. I will admit to once filing a front sight but only because it was too wide!!!and off. To sight one in at the range YOU must be the known quantity, are you?  Only you can answer the question.. Has anyone else tried the pistol's zero? That might prove an interesting experience..

I'll bet that the gun has a left hand (counter-clockwise) twist to the rifling. when you shoot it the gun recoils up a bit but also twists to the right (clockwise) in your hand. Shoot it with some light loads using light bullets and see if it comes back to center. then shoot it with heavier bullets and see if it goes further to the right. I know that this happens because it has happened to me with a 357. With fixed sights it is very difficult to correct and I doubt that sending it to a gunsmith will do much good. You can make an offset front blade if it is removable but it will look kid of wierd. Bending the sight is definately not the answer but having it fitted with an adjustable front sight might be do-able. It all just depends on your pocketbook and desire to correct the sights.
