cast feeding problems in Marlin 1894 in .44
« on: July 25, 2006, 05:18:31 PM »
Hi Veral,

I need a lbt bullet that will feed reliably in my 1894 .44 mag. it is an older model before the cross bolt saftey.
I have your .280 WFN for my blackhawk that shoots superb. But no matter what lenght I seat it to it will not cycle in the Marlin. It seams the meplate is to big or the ogive is not tapered enough for the guns liking. I have the Lee .310 that cycles fine but the mold produces out of round and accurracy suffers. I modified the carrier to help it feed a longer COL but it did not help.Could you please give me a recomendation on what bullet would feed reliably and I will order one up.

thanks

Dan

The LFN will feed smooth as silk if the nose length is cut a tad under .45, and I reccomend a 280 gr for best all around use.  300 gr will stabilize and shoot very accurately, but needs about 1800 fps to do it, which is mild pressure wise, but recoil from the tiny gun takes all the fun out of it.  A 280 gr stabilizes very well at speeds down to 1400 fps at least, which is excellent deer velocity if you want mild recoil.  Best to get a .432 diameter and size that size so the chamber is filled up, to keep bullets straight on takeoff, even though the barrel is probably close to .429.
